A friend of mine is planning to buy a laptop for Data Science work. Should have a NVidia GPU for some basic ML model training work. Budget 50-60K Any recommendations?

Buy with Ryzen Proc. & Above GTX 1660 is better for that work, If there is RTX Cards in that price range then go for it but as of now GPU prices went skyrocketing so is Laptop prices

@helpful-gigabyte-47939 is the Oracle in this regard. He answered my silliest questions around configuration very patiently.

@hundreds-winter-88791 It was nothing, happy to help. 🙂 Unfortunately, laptops don't give you a lot of flexibility in configuring exactly what you need compared to desktops. @swift-microphone-91058 is right - I'd want lots of CPUs (Ryzen, ideally), lots of memory (16 GB+) and a fast disk (NVME) for that usecase. But all that won't fit into the budget mentioned by @faint-energy-11966. Add to that the restriction of an Nvidia GPU, so we have to first filter by GPU and then restrict ourselves to 8GB. I'd only care to recommend the Asus Vivobooks 14s and Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 in that budget having used older models before. If you increase the budget to ~70K, there are a lot more options. Amazon has a great search as well, allowing filtering for exactly the features you need.

A similar discussion happened in another group. The consensus that was reached was to go with MacBook Air + $10/mo Google colab subscription. Maybe swap MacBook Air with Lenovo ThinkPad for low budget

+1 on google colab pro for things like this. For serious work I use Sagemaker at work

Didn't know Colab Pro is available in India now. Last time I checked it was only available in US. Anywho, my friend can't really pay for a colab subscription. So, that's why they are looking for a laptop with a GPU
What about MSI? Do they have proper post sale support and service centers in India?

@faint-energy-11966 There is another way depending on exactly what they're working on and if they're savvy with embedded boards and Linux. Nvidia Jetson Nano devkit (~80 USD) is quite a powerful development platform for GPU compute. Pair it with any laptop - develop on the laptop, deploy onto the Jetson.

Hey @Amit, I do have a few questions about assembling a CPU if you can spare about 15-20 minutes of your time. Let me know. Cheers!

@quiet-midnight-20665 sure thing, DM me.
