Hello folks! Have anyone used gitpod, github codespaces or docker development environment? Upon some reading, I can say that gitpod and codespaces are development environment running in the cloud. While docker development environment is similar, except that it pulls the dev environment from the cloud to run it locally. I see the benefits of gitpod and codespaces that with the help of pre built dev environment in cloud, we can easily switch git context (commits, branches and PRs). However, what about real time debugging using breakpoints, how will we do that, should we have the push new commits to cloud and wait for rebuild and then test the code? Won't that be painful? If yes, can docker development environment be a solution to this as it will run locally? https://collabnix.com/getting-started-with-docker-dev-environments/ https://docs.docker.com/desktop/dev-environments/ https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/github-codespaces-vs-gitpod-cloud-based-dev-environments/

No, you are actually connected to the machine and don't need to push code and build. You work as you would work on your machine. Build in the terminal via vscode or you can SSH into the machine too from iTerm or similar terminal applications and build it there. It's someone else's machine with your code on it with all dev related dependencies all setup for you, that you define via setup files. With Docker or other tools that you prefer to use.

Means in step debugging, for each step, a network call will be made from browser to the remote dev environment. That seems slow. I think I should first try docker development environment as it will run locally, then maybe gitpod.

I have tried both gitpod and codespaces. gitpod for personal projects and use codespaces for work extensively(for around 6-8 months now) and have not faced any lag or slow down even with Live Share (VS Code feature for pair programming) programming with coworkers.

Okay I will try then! Thank you 😊

That’s why main requirement for remote development setup is a great internet. If you don’t have that then it would be a frustrating experience

That would be impossible for a nomad.
