I’m planning to upgrade HDD to SSD in my old laptop. Thinking of buying this Samsung one, and in the reviews few of them mentioned that they are out of warranty from day 1 when they tried to register it on the samsung website. Also thinking of using the DVD drive slot for the HDD by using a caddy. 1. How do I know for sure if I am getting an original Samsung SSD? 2. If it’s out of warranty does it affect us that much? 3. If you had used this caddy for HDD before, how’s your experience? are we better off with getting an external case and use it as an external drive. 4. Also I’m just going with the brand name here, not much experience with SSD’s. Should I check other brands like WD? https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B08T1QQZ1T/ https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B00HD7QQQA/

Buy the SSD from primeabgb.com. Trusted seller. Also, out of warranty won't really affect that much. My EVO 850 SSD has been working without issues since 2015.

I had the same concern regarding warranty when I upgraded my SSD. When I tried registering my SSD, it showed Out of warranty. I called up Samsung customer care after this and they told me that I should keep the box intact and I would be able to claim warranty when needed. No need worry about registration. My SSD was the m.2 model though. Which is different from the one you are linking to.

@kind-queen-6796 I am thinking of buying from Amazon now. Any downside?
k
@thousands-morning-63911 Not any downsides, however the upside of buying directly from the seller is that they usually take care of RMA (personal experience with primeabgb).

@thousands-morning-63911 Samsung’s QVO series is upgraded one as EVO is relatively old gen now. https://www.amazon.in/Samsung-Internal-Solid-State-MZ-77Q1T0BW/dp/B089QXQ1TV/

yeah, and also QVO is cheaper, almost getting 1TB for the same price as of EVO 500GB one but durability is very less as it uses QLC whereas EVO uses TLC which nearly doubles the lifespan.

BTW this is for my personal laptop, which I use only for playing minecraft and torrents. So which one should I go for? EVO or QVO. I play for an hour or so for 4-5 days a week.

Be it TLC or QLC, your SSD won't die on you unless you use it to write terabytes of data every day for a couple years. And since your primary usage is gaming, it is mostly data reads so doesn't affect much. For torrenting, do you have a spinning hard drive still present in laptop? As I wouldn't use SSD for data storage that doesn't need to be accessed in fastest way possible.

Yeah looks like that. I went through some articles comparing both and most suggested QVO for daily usage and EVO for multimedia editing. I’ll get the 1TB QVO one. Thanks @flat-morning-91037

If you're going the DVD drive-caddy way, then be careful while removing the cover-clip, I broke mine. Fortunately, I was able to salvage it by attaching it to the caddy by using some scotch tape 😅 Other than that I absolutely recommend going for a SSD (I purchsed the Crucial one - it going great since last 6 mounts)
