Looking for suggestion: I have been looking at tablets for hand written notes. I have explored tablets such as Samsung tab S6/S7/S7-FE, apple ipads(but buying apple pencil seems deal-breaker), remarkable 2(ecosystem seems small and not available in India), new lenevo tablets etc,edit: surface devices but seems out of budget. How does your experience looks like? Another thing is given the cost of these tablets (50 -80k), one could get 360x touch laptops too. I'm not sure of the pen response on these screens. Any suggestions or personal experiences are welcome.
f
For hand written notes, the overall writing experience and the features of writing apps, getting iPad is a way to go. I'd suggest to get last gen Pro, or may be Air 4.

Nothing comes close to ipads
I have a 360 laptop and it's nowhere close
You can get the base model ipad + apple pencil for 35k
And if you want a bigger screen one of the older ipad pros might be n the budget
f
Note that only iPad Pros have 9ms input latency and that too for Apple Pencil 2. So it's better to try it out in person in store to see what works for you.

@rhythmic-monitor-96972 why is Apple pencil a dealbreaker?
d
I have a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (note the Lite) and it comes with a s-pen and I have been using it for handwritten notes. I also use it for my daughter’s online class homework 🙂 It works well, and I was surprised that it does - LTE, SD Card, s-pen included, Samsung DEX support at Rs.28k (got it with some HDFC card discount they have on the store) - seems to have a good offer on Amazon right now. If you are just looking for handwritten notes, this might be good enough. I was thinking there will be a S7 Lite but there’s only a costlier S7 FE. Like others have mentioned, Apple iPad Pros are the benchmark.

@cold-school-3088 mostly additional cost.
I have considered s6 lite and it's seems a really good deal. Can you share a bit about how is the display ?
@damp-coat-97256
@flat-morning-91037 s7+ also have 9ms response
f
I meant on the iPad side, only Pros have 9ms latency. Also, S7+ pricing similar to last gen iPad Pro (which is still way more powerful than anything Qualcomm or Samsung has ever produced), but apps like Goodnotes, Notability do not exist on Android.
d
@rhythmic-monitor-96972 - it’s ok. I mostly write notes on it or use it for o’reilly library. Odd Netlifx or youtube. It’s not a great display for sure.

Just add the cost of the pencil into the tablet. With the base ipad it's still really good. You should go try it out and also app ecosystem is faaaar better in iOS
Android is just bad.
f
Android is good only on phones, Google just bailed on tablets long time ago, so even app developers don't care for optimising or building apps for Android on tablet. Not to mention the OS update situation.

Make sense
f
TL;DR don't spend more than 30k on Android tablet, it won't last long any way.
k
do you exclusively want the experience of writing directly on screen? if not, then get a small wacom. if yes, nothing beats the ipad.

@flat-morning-91037 I agree with all that you say, but Samsung has been doing good work with the apps. Samsung Notes and some of the creative apps they have are good. I basically got S6 Lite after using basic iPad for a while and just trying to see what's there in Android world and was pleasantly surprised. Dex is also pretty awesome and I don't think there's an equivalent in iOS? But yes, if you want lot of creative work beyond basic notes, conversion, pdf edit, some drawing apps, iPad is the king. And good advice on dont go above 30k on Android side.
f
Yes, with Android you're largely at mercy of OEM for software too due to Google not giving shit, Dex is amazing and I wish iPadOS adds proper external monitor support instead of that letter-boxed screen.

Thanks for sharing your points folks.

And apple basically gives you a lot of updates for the same hardware. I think 5 year old ipads got iOS 15 can't say the same about Android at all.
f
I bought an iPad for exactly the same reason: taking notes. Then I ended up not using it for note-taking at all. I do however use it for annotating PDFs but that happens occasionally. I mostly use it for media consumption and reading. Kinda regret spending that much to be honest. My apple pencil is lying dormant in a box. Could do all of that with any other cheap tablet 🤷‍♂️
m
@faint-energy-11966 you saved me half a lakh. Was thinking getting it for the same reason
c
FYI, if apple pencil is too expensive, you can also use "Logitech Crayon". It works very well with the iPads. I use it with Ipad Air 4 for taking notes.

I sold my iPad Pro 11" 2018 (used for an entire year) for a Galaxy Tab S7 last year. I prefer the S7 and find it miles ahead of the iPad, including the experience of using the pencil. I recently did a rant about it on Twitter. Start here and scroll down: https://twitter.com/umanghome/status/1439841880401866754
My biggest gripe against the Apple Pencil is being unable to use navigation gestures with the Pencil, which is a dumb software limitation that you cannot get around. https://twitter.com/umanghome/status/1439847976860459010
Apple puts an overpowered processor on the iPads and holds it back using the software. It’s like driving a Ferrari whose speed is capped at 20 kmph.
f
Fully agree on the iPadOS software limitation, but having used iPads since 2014, I think Apple has come a long way (even if at snail's pace). Besides, they want to keep selling Macs so can't have products cannibalising each other.

Hi, For my limited use-case of note-taking, I will purchase a graphic tablets which seem to suffice for my needs. I will definitely miss out on the underneath pen action but for starters it seems like a great deal given the upfront cost and use-case. Will upgrade to iPad later when required. I hope notebooks like surface or ipad becomes the norm in future.
