Though I am very excited about it but also a bit scared. Any pointers what to expect, what I should I take care about. I guess we might have had discussion about it previously if someone can point me there that would be great. Phani Mahesh Firstly, congratulations on your first remote job. Essentials: 1. Mark an office space. Can be as simple as a particular chair and table. Do not use these for anything else. To go to office, enter your office space. Leave when taking breaks. 2. Do not change your office space for atleast the first month, preferably however long until it takes you to establish routines and assosciate the office space with work. Do not colocate your office space in your bedroom if you can. It is convenient to keep them together but you lose the boundary. Either your work will suffer or your rest/sleep will. 3. Communication makes or breaks a remote job. Don’t be afraid to elaborate if necessary. Prefer emails to document decisions, discussions, etc, unless there is an established alternative. Shoot an email summary after any meeting - just a few lines with action points and topics discussed would do. You’ll settle into your style soon. Mine is typically either one/two liners or a full page of explanation, no headers or footers. 4. Even if you have flexible timings, set a schedule and stick to it. Flexibility is a privilege, use it when needed. Unplanned days get no work done. Speaking from experience. 5. Depending on the company and established culture, your remote experience varies. If your company is not remote first, it may take some initial effort from your end to get them used to scheduling a call or maintaining email trails for discussions. If you feel left out, communicate. 6. Set boundaries with whoever else you’re living with. Especially in India where remote is not even well known, people assume you’re not working when you’re home. Communicate that your office space is yours, and you shouldn’t be disturbed there when working. 7. Have fun. Tldr: communication, office space, schedule, fun. Phani Mahesh Oh also, go out. Make that point 0. Get a gym membership, scope out meetups and join them, etc. Meet people.
