Folks from the city of Lucknow: how is the the tech scene? I am gonna be there for a few months. I've lived there before - did some of my schooling in this city, until ~2003), but the city looks quite different from what I remember. What are the fun things to do? I can use recommendations about any co-working spaces or laptop-friendly cafes

Hey all, My company(Tyk) recently launched a no-strings-attached micro-grant for side projects💰- can be tech or non-tech. We’re a company that grew as a side project, and now brands using Tyk range from Singapore Post, to global organisations like Capital One and Starbucks. So we’d really like to give back to the community. I know that some people here are working on side projects. So as soon as we launched, I wanted to make sure this community is aware. You can read more about the fund and apply here here: https://tyk.io/fund/ I’d by happy to answer any questions regarding the fund. If you’re not comfortable posting publicly, feel free to DM me. Cheers

Hello tribe, Anyone here who work as freelancers, working on >1 ongoing projects? How do you divide and allocate your time to these projects? Do you work on a certain project on certain days or allocate a certain number of hours from each day? Would love to get some feedback from seasoned folks tackling this!

    (1) Never work alone. Find someone interested in the same problem but with complimentary skills (2) Ruthless prioritization is key. Only work on tasks that are really important. (3) For (2) to happen, there cannot be any hour-based or day-based allocation of time. Pick up the highest priority task from the projects that will help it succeed. This assumes that you care about the success of those projects. If starting new projects and merely working on them is what you care about - then this won't be relevant.

🙋‍♂️ I'm sorry. I haven't done any zoom calls in the last 4 weeks. Some of it has to do with my fear of moderating these discussions. But mostly it is me procrastinating 😓 I am sending out an SOS signal to folks who want to share tips/strategies on "How to get a remote job". Having an AMA/Live interview format might just work in getting over my inertia. We could do a panel too if we have many show of hands. Let's see. Happy to receive any ideas/suggestions to make the zoom call a more consistent affair 🙂

Hey Guys, I wanted some advice on a situation. I was contacted by an agency that one of their clients needed some consulting done. Now I am not sure who should i be signing the contract with. With the agency or the client directly? I was thinking of having my contract with the agency and then asking them to deal with the client. That way I can get more clients from the agency.

While its fresh in my head, I'll mention one more thing to those that have just recently started remote or will go remote soon:

    02/29/2020, 10:45 AM
YOU NEED SEPARATION OF CONCERNS. Do not work out of your bed. Have a desk and chair setup so you know mentally that works happens at the desk and sleep happens on the bed. Its very very easy to confuse it for the brain and you'll be complaining of both physical problems and lack of productivity very soon.

@straight-continent-34777 excellent advice. I’ve personally found myself to be more productive when working from home, after having had a shower and a change of clothes. If possible, one must set up a small home office separate from the general living area. Worth the investment.

@straight-continent-34777 Agree wholeheartedly. I wrote up some notes for my colleagues based on my experience of working remotely for 2+ years. This features prominently there. • Have a
    dedicated workspace
, preferably a separate room. If you don't have that, a separate table. If you don't have that, a separate computer for your non-work computing. Essentially you want to emphasize your work/life boundaries • Stick with office wear which you'd wear to an office. Pick these with the same care that you'd give to office wear. • If you have the option to work from elsewhere, do that once in a while • If you live with other people make sure they understand you're working. This won't be easy • Backups, backups, backups. Network, computer, peripherals, phone, electricity. Work out surge protection, thunderstorms and anything else that happens where you are. Stick with 80/20 rule here i.e. don't have to go all the way to the extent of switching to your backup network within a millisecond. Figure out beforehand where things could be serviced if they fail, have an idea of possible downtimes for something in the chain and design around that. (E.g. my electricity goes off once in a while, but the downtimes is in minutes, so my UPS and backup network is arranged accordingly. For the black-swan event of my electricity being away for a day, i have a friend's home within 40 minutes to work out of.) Work out this stuff beforehand, you don't want to decide when things break. • Keep consistent hours, let people know what these are, let people know when you change them • Have a remote pairing setup where you can switch consistently. • Working-form-home consistently can be mentally exhausting. Make sure you socialize religiously! Make sure you socialize with others (non-project/team folks) in the office • Resist the temptation to keep coming back to your work computer. Initially you'll do this a lot, wean yourself off it with time. • You will have more
    blue
days compared to working in an office. Be prepared. Take off when needed. • Move a lot, take regular breaks, stretch, protect your eyes (The usual desk setup guidelines e.g. OSHA and desk stretches apply)
