Good discussion around salaries. It is currently a hot topic as remote work is being implemented at scale first time due to Covid-19. Not related to the current discussion but the time requirement is to have more remote jobs. Why we discuss only a handful of companies when we talk about distributed companies? Gitlab, Zapier, elastic, buffer and doist. These companies are great but we need more companies like them. They can only employee a few thousand people. There are hundreds of other distributed companies but that number is also low compared to people interested. In current uncertain times people needs access to more remote roles.

On a lighter note:

It's a connected system, with one too many variables. Company's HQ location, salaries, real estate prices, cost of living, etc. If remote will become mainstream it will have an effect on the entire system and prices (salaries, and other variable) will correct themselves overtime, no one can control the supply, demand and the prices in an market as open as a jobs market.

Will these companies that want location-based compensation change their pay if I moved to a different place? Let's assume I got a gig when I was in Thailand and the comp was based on the cost of living in Thailand, now if I move to the bay area or NY the next month do these companies increase my comp as long as I am in the region with a high cost of living? We know FB is now decreasing the pay of people who go remote from SF, will they increase it if they come back to SF?

Yes that’s usually how it works.

It is easier moving down 😉 but there is much more friction when they have to increase it upwards.

I was discussing this with a friend a few days back, a lot of people use time trackers to bill their employers... what if those tools also have a location monitoring tool which can increase or decrease their hourly rate based on the cost of living of the aforementioned location

Hey folks - I am in a situation where I am in a Zoom call and all the participants need to watch a short 5-10m video while on the call. Instead of screen sharing and streaming the video from my screen which is a horrible experience, does anyone have any ideas in which we can make this work? I have come across solutions like: https://www.watch2gether.com/ (and similar) Which basically creates a synced up room. Hoping for something simpler as the participants will be younger children and it will be tricky to pass the URL (to click on) via Zoom and then bring them back to the call 🤷 It would be awesome if there was a zoom plugin which did it for you - like go to a theatre mode and bring you back.
