Before making an issue or PR I wanted to confirm here. When using the agent SDK and the OpenHands Cloud auth API key and url I should be using the top key in the API Keys page correct? I kept having issues authenticating because I was using the second, OpenHands API Keys below and only when I re-read everything a few times did I realize I needed the LLM key facepalm . So thinking an extra line to clarify might help here and the docs.

Just to note, there have been previous reports that it's a bit confusing, and questions about it. My slow brain also has to read and to remember to prompt the agent too that it's "LLM" not "API" even though it's for "LLM API" - ha! And I've been playing with both... well since they existed. lolsob What if we moved the LLM one to the LLM page?
h
Is this the same API key that is used in the LLM page?
c
😅 It's ... the LLM API key we can use with •
openhands/modelname
• this key • (no base url is necessary, but it goes to AH
app proxy
)
In the Web UI (Open Source, local), the above means the user needs to enter it, I think
In the Web UI Cloud version, the above means the user doesn't need nor can enter it, I think
lol

I think in the very short term a bit of extra text on the API keys and the docs to help specifically when using the agent sdk would be super helpful
c
OK let's try 😅
Is this the same API key that is used in the LLM page?
So the answer here is Yes, except for the Web Cloud because you can't enter a key there once you chose "openhands"...

Maybe it makes sense to call the second section Cloud API Keys since its mapped to https://docs.openhands.dev/openhands/usage/cloud/cloud-api in usage
c
Yes, it does... 🤔
About the previous suggestion. Two alternatives: (1) LLM Settings page, basic LLM Settings • Provider • Model • API key (New section, visually separated) Get an LLM API key for using OpenHands Cloud as your LLM Provider • OpenHands LLM key
(2) LLM Settings page, basic LLM Settings • Provider • Model • API key only an informative message that you can also get an LLM key to use with openhands provider, and a link to another tab? OpenHands LLM Provider (new page) (explanation; the LLMs served via this provider are LLMs that OpenHands works best with) (maybe even link to index or summary of performance findings) OpenHands LLM key • create one etc Use in: • OpenHands-CLI • Web GUI maybe (run locally) • SDK How to use: link to docs
(so separate it completely FROM the other one, the other "API key", they're just... not like each other)
Sorry, I edited a bit. I feel like we do have quite a bit of stuff to say about OpenHands as LLM Provider, maybe it's actually (2) worth its own tab

Yea its a bit tangled right now. I feel like I can't really say I lean one way or another on splitting it out. I like simplicity of need key, go to API Keys. Maybe someone else has some thoughts to weigh in here too

Small PR to add some tweaks to the docs for now

Left a tiny comment. Maybe my knowledge of the behavior of LLM API keys is outdated? It's a bit surprising to not be able to create more keys, could you maybe tell why or is it certain?
