Take a look at which demonstrates how just adding a couple of properties to your html tags with htmx lets you replace only a portion of your page (i.e. no full page refresh) to fetch a form which can then be submitted in the same fashion to retrieve updated data
  • h
is a good example of the way to do it without htmx
  • h
    yeah that's a good example
  • h
I think the bottom line for what you've said about your experience
  • t
This is a good example of what I meant by "we don't need to explain javascript" when people want to get started with htmx.
  • h
htmx is a lib to make it easier to update data/submit to the server WITHOUT a full page refresh
  • h
I think if he's a developer though it is probably easier to start w/ the fundamentals and then show how htmx simplifies it
  • t
If the problem is "how do I load different images based on the value of a select", the answer doesn't have to be "first you make the universe", it can just be
    hx-get="/images" hx-trigger="change"
  • h
I agree that if people have a specific usecase showing them how to solve that w/ the tool is best
  • h
but in this case he doesn't have a specific case and doesn't understand how this tool fits into the ecosystem
  • h
I know he approached this as "tutorial for non web devs" but that's not right as he's actually a web dev and just backend only
  • t
While I would agree that a dev should understand the underlying mechanisms, someone who is not a dev and just wants to make their website a bit better doesn't need to know what an ajax is or why people call it an XmlHttpRequest when you don't even write it in xml
  • h
    yes I agree
  • h
what you are suggesting is like
  • h
    "htmx for designers"
  • h
which would be a great tutorial
  • t
Maybe I didn't quite use the right tone from the start here, but if the point of htmx is to write less javascript, I think we should move away from explaining how it works in comparison to javascript, and instead just explain how it works.
  • h
I think a javascript-free tutorial would be great
  • t
I really think the examples on htmx.org do a great job of that
  • m
I have always felt that htmx would be great for designers
  • m
for example: they can use CSS transitions now w/o javascript
  • h
and I think there's a large class of people would be really happy to read that tutorial and be happy there
  • t
however, anything regarding fetching content still requires knowledge of how that content is served
  • h
I also think, in this case, there's something else being asked which is "how do I start my journey as a frontend developer with htmx"
  • t
    /s/knowledge/control/
  • h
    yeah true
  • h
which brings me back to my original question - if we wanted to write a tutorial targeting designers/non technical folks
  • h
what are the platforms that they're actually using
  • t
The first step for a frontend developer would be "convince the backend developer to give you html endpoints"
