I think the one piece that's tricky for this is any "non-developer" tool I can think of is pure frontend
  • h
so I'm not sure what the best starting point is
  • s
Agreed, it's tricky to pin point. I'm a dirty python dev so naturally I'd suggest a flask app, but that's not applicable to everyone.
  • t
The part I got confused was when you asked for an htmx guide to explain how to do things in javascript, and then htmx. A non-dev doesn't need to know a single thing about javascript in order to use htmx at a basic level. However, htmx does require you to be able to make your web server respond to your requests with some html. How "non-dev"-y can you really be when you're wanting to use htmx?
  • t
I suppose you could just have static html partials on your server
  • h
when people are getting started it's not always obvious how the pieces fit together
  • h
it's fair to say "I don't know anything about this large cross section of the world and I dig your vibe - help me understand more"
  • s
Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea. To my understanding, htmx was a bridge to make html more interactive.
  • t
What I'm trying to understand is how far down the rabbit hole we're gonna go here. Do we assume people know how to write html, and want to make their html load other bits of html in a fancy way?
  • h
I think what @salmon-rain-71933 is asking is "what kind of problems can I actually solve with htmx"
  • s
    Gone summed it up great.
  • h
which is not immediately obvious if you don't understand what it's replacing, EG fetch/ajax
  • s
I'm struggling to find an entry point.
  • t
htmx is essentially a way to make your html do asynchronous requests to a web server to display html, or bits of html, without having to write any javascript of your own.
  • h
@salmon-rain-71933 have you writen an ajax request
  • s
I know html and can whip up flask apps no issue. I'm just curious what adding htmx would do to my stack.
  • s
No sir, but now I'll read into it.
  • h
that would be a good place to start
  • h
if you want to issue an ajax request in vanilla javascript
  • h
    you do something like
  • t
Have you read through the documentation and examples on htmx.org?
  • h
    fetch('/some/url/).then((response) -> do some stuff)
  • h
EG loading data from the server without needing to refresh the page
  • h
A good example would be like
  • h
a table with an inline edit button on each row
  • h
you want to edit the row but not refresh the page
  • h
The best way to understand htmx is that you can do that with javascript by writing a bunch of code
  • h
or you could use htmx by following a convention and dropping an attribute into the html
  • h
    which is significantly less code/state/bugs
  • h
If you haven't done an ajax call before that's the right place to start imho
