big thank you to @User for putting this feature through the paces and contributing some excellent, real world examples
  • a
    History cache on forms
  • g
another attempt at merging forum and chat
  • c
    that could work
  • m
Thank you. This is a big one! Hope you can take another look at the focus scroll one to see if it can make it into 1.7.
  • m
    just merged it
  • m
I added some docs, can you take a peek and verify that they are correct?
  • m
I was going to say I needed to do that. Will take a look now. Thanks!
  • m
yep, and if you can add an item to the release notes on it that would be great too
  • m
this looks good, when will it be available?
  • g
probably never, as I've noticed problems with the idea
  • h
I've always thought that a joint chat/forum/mailing list was a killer product
  • g
the problems with mixing forum and chat: - forum posts need to be archivable, which is hard to do without adding barriers to posting - it's hard to catch up with everything new on a forum as posts are split across threads - the split threads issue also means the community feels less active - conversations meander from topic to topic, which makes them hard to split into threads
  • g
for most of my attempts I've been coming at it from the chat side and trying to add more forum-like elements
  • h
a community I work with here in nyc area really likes https://zulip.com/
  • g
however, being in a server that makes heavy use of discord threads made me realize that it always disrupts the ambiance of the chat
  • h
they claim that it handles archival stuff better from a ux pov
  • h
  • h
    it's still very chat focused
  • g
the thing I'm designing is targeted at free software projects
  • g
where contributors come and go, onboarding processes should be eliminated, users should have an identity that they can build trust upon instead of being an amorphous mesh of comments
  • h
+ there needs to be long lived discussion for specific issues
  • h
    so good threading that's discoverable
  • g
maybe just a "general chat" sticky thread at the top of each channel would be enough
  • g
and mod tools to copy posts to a new thread, as shown in the drawing
  • g
    also it's all search engine-indexable
  • h
yeah some way to move comments to a thread is a great idea
  • h
imho so is a tool to promote a thread to a "forum post"
  • h
like a thread is still fundamentally real time and then at some point it bumps up to long-lived
  • h
and then discovery is limited to channels + "posts/long lived threads"
