    maybe the parent container is autosized? (ie, it doesnt have a % or px width), in which case the size of the container will be the size of the image, so there is nothing to center

    no worries - by default most things are autosized, which means, unless you specify a size, they will be the size of the their children. In this case, say your image is 100x100, then an autosized container will be 100x100 also, which means when you try to center something in it, the position it will calculate will be 0x0
