I think in general once you start going to straight git it's hard for Graphite to maintain it's state and there probably isn't a great way to resolve besides what you did. The Graphite way for what you originally tried to do was

gt split

and if there are things you're trying to do that

gt

doesn't support please let us know!

Sure - I understand that going git wasn't the best approach. I was more hoping to find out what I should have done right from the start. It looks like

gt split

is something I need to look into for next time
