** I could achieve this by making the property field a mutable field with type
Provider<...>
but I rather stick to immutability when possible (also looks a bit grosser to the end user)

Making it a mutable field totally contradicts the sense, you should never do that, as then again wiring for lazy evaluation is half-way pointless. And Kotlin DSL users also cannot use assignment anymore to set the value of the property. What you want is currently not possible. You need to document the default value and if a user wants to change the value, he has to set the full new value, unless you provide the default value in an independent property or provider so that you can use
map
without circular reference. Besides that, in 8.6 you can use `update`: https://github.com/gradle/gradle/issues/27227

@Vampire Ya,
update
looks to be what I want. When is 8.6 set for release (Ie. should I wait for it if its coming out in a day or two, or should I go with an alternative you suggested?) Im on 8.5 right now so im all set to update
Ah, found the 8.6-rc-1 update, I'll stick with that now I think. Thanks for the help!
