I have a separate bank account for maaser that I automatically transfer money into when I get my paycheck. When I set up YNAB, I linked that account, so I end up needing to categorize the transfer as a transfer and then categorize every transaction in that account as “charity”. I’m wondering if I should just remove the account from YNAB entirely, categorize the transfer out as “charity”, and then that’s it. Don’t needa deal with every transaction from my tzedaka account, and my budget will be simpler. Thoughts?

I recommend not putting your maiser account in YNAB and categorizing just the transfer out as tzedaka.

Kewl thanks. Now I needa figure out how to remove it without screwing up the other numbers.

@freezing-morning-76208 does your employer let you have multiple direct deposit accounts? I have mine go straight into maaser from my paycheck so I can ignore it entirely.

My employer only allows splitting it to by fixed amount not percentage 😭😭

You could figure out the amount and do it like that. That being said I'm shocked aws doesn't have more advanced capabilities. My previous employer let me split by multiple and each could be percentage or flat amount based. It was great.

I also had this issue, but then realized that with YNAB I can have everything in 1 account and just have a category for maaser, so that every month I can just assign the right amount to that category. Since that recent epiphany, I closed my maaser account and just check ynab to see how much maaser I have to disburse

@brash-raincoat-84042 but then you're still doing the manual calculation and assignment for every paycheck, right? I do the same thing, but I wish I could set up a rule in ynab to do the calculation and assignment automatically for all incoming money

@freezing-morning-76208 I faced the same challenge. Eventually I realized that you can have more than one budget in YNAB. I removed my maaser account from my main budget and I have a separate charity budget where I can allocate money for various tzedakas.

Some good ideas here, thanks y’all!

+1 for this it's no different than using why ynab for what it does best, which is allocating your money into different envelopes...you're maaser is just another envelope figure out income - expenses which enable income * 10% and set that as a refilliable target
a big downside with a physical second account is that you may have fees on the account, and how do you justify paying the bank with you maaser money?

One of the biggest changes that I now love about YNAB is being able to consolidate my bank accounts. I'm so excited about it. Also I love all the great ideas in this thread. You guys are awesome ❤️
