Can we talk about the colliding worlds of deal WhatsApp groups and credit card signup bonuses, with an almost buzzfeed level spammyness?

Yeah I am getting sick of how spammy it is and that most of it is never really DEALS. What specifically would you want to discuss
a
Here are the issues I’ve noticed so far: 1. They post a cc signup bonus with every single message 2. As they attempt to compete with each other, they find different ways to restructure the same thing in different ways - chase ink 90k points becomes 180k if you do 2, what if you’re married? Make that 360k, what if you and your wife refer each other? Another 20k points per referral - these things are true, but scalability is not part of a “deal” 3. whenever they are better off if you use their referral vs signing up yourself, (for example, when their link is a lower bonus than your own link) they do not convey the best deal to you ( this is even true of DansDeals, who is usually pretty reliable)
m
Definitely agree. I have not been a fan of all these deal groups since they lack a lot of transparency or any commitment to a set of standards

You know, if you just delete WhatsApp you won't have any of these issues 😁

@witty-engineer-80805 How will I learn about signup bonuses then? 😜
c
My biggest issue with any deal chat type of thing is how much they make you want to buy things you never would have even thought to buy. I muted them after having them for a couple of months. They just weren't worth it.

but what would I do without my toaster that can also mow my lawn?
s
You could move to Brooklyn where we don't have any lawns

@curved-toothbrush-84425 Very disciplined of you, we trick ourselves into thinking that Deals will quickly disappear so we must always be following just in case we need something, and end up finding random stuff- I hope this suggestion doesn’t do more harm then good, but slickeals.com has a much better selection of deals, each one gets up/downvoted and user comments so u can get a sense of what’s legitimately a good deal, and most importantly you can go on when you need, instead of getting constant alerts, and even set specific keywords to get emails about while you avoid the rest
m
i use keepa.com which let’s me tell it what things i want to be notified about so I never get a deal notification for something I didn’t already want to buy
i tell it what product and at what price i want to be notified

Love this, also a great way to see price history so when the Amazon seller lists as 35% off you know if they just raised the price last week or it’s actually historically low….
m
exactly 🙂
helps me fend off dans deal’s fake deals
s
I like camelcamelcamel.com for seeing Amazon price history

I'd love to see a breakdown of how much people save on deal sites, vs how much they spend more than they would have otherwise. This doesn't only mean buying things you don't need, but also buying things you need at a /higher/ price because it's discounted. (I'm looking at you, "$600 down from $1000" winter coats I once saw on a deals site.)

Yeah, I tend to restrict my "buy a deal I don't really need" to sub $10 and when I can think of a legitimate use. I'm very happy with my $10 battery organizer I never knew I wanted. Just got a $10 bamboo "shtender" even though I don't need another, but I figure my son can always use it in the future. Then I feel good about myself 😂 I recall being horrified by a deal on some pot with a fancy French name for $350... Found the link: https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/amazon/le-creuset-enameled-cast-iron-signature-13-25-quart-round-dutch-oven-349-95-shipped-amazon-260-price-drop/

Okay but seriously I have the pot and it's incredible.

(I have the <100 Amazon knockoff and I don't use it much but I can't imagine what the difference is. Happy to be convinced otherwise)

@numerous-painter-34085 ? Help 😂
n
@mysterious-tomato-10057 I'm cracking up 🤣 Please educate me 😂
I bought a whole gas grill for ⅓ that sale price 😁
m
@steep-dog-55906 does yours have a French name? I think not!
(honestly this was one of our first purchases as a couple and it was before I knew enough about finance to realize listening to my mom's name brand recommendation wasn't the best idea) (It was the cheapest name brand my mom was recommending) 😂
s
In all fairness mine is only 6qt (just checked!) A coworker bought it for me as a present, because she uses it to make sourdough. I've used it maybe... 5 times in 4 years?
m
So we use it multiple times a week for years and its still totally solid (we use it for sourdough also)
n
Yeah, we (as if I had anything to do with it) put a $200 set of hard anodized pots and pans on our BBB registry and some kind soul bought it for us. Still going strong after 10 years of use, although we might need a new pan soon 😂
m
Wait it's cast iron pan and it isn't lasting?
n
Nah, boring old non-stick. Hard-anodized is better than Teflon - doesn't scratch. But 10+ years with a lot of use on a ~$40 pan works for me 😀
m
Gotcha. Yeah that makes sense. 10 years is the most any pan can last that isn't cast iron or amazing stainless steel.
I feel like good pots and pans can definitely be worth the investment. We just threw away all our Teflon
n
What's a good pot/pan? Cast iron? What makes it good? Asking from ignorance
m
If you want a pan that lasts, it needs to not contain any 'PFAS's, which basically means you're stuck with stainless steel or cast iron.
Companies will go through great lengths to avoid saying they contain PFAS. So much so that I had to find the patent for a pan that claimed to not contain any added chemicals in order to see that they put it in.
n
Does cast iron cook better? Or when you said good, you were referring to its lack of PFASs?
m
It cooks better for certain things like steak, and cooks worse for certain things like eggs. When I said better though, I was referring to how long it lasts. PFAS have to not last so long because the chemicals that are bound to the pan wear off. Even the highest quality PFAS don't last past 10 years.
👍 1
Most last much less time.
If you can't survive without your non stick PFAS, hex clad is a pan which is half stainless steel half PFAS so you can kinda get the best of both worlds.
