Great quote from Warren Buffett: "Our aversion to leverage has dampened our returns over the years. But Charlie [Munger] and I sleep well. Both of us believe it is insane to risk what you have and need in order to obtain what you don’t need." I think this is important advice for a lot of financial decisions, e.g. buying a house before you're financially ready, especially in areas where the monthly cost is much more than rent.

controversial post right here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-7332444266637500416-GXfP?utm_source=share&utm[…]m=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAABZb-l0BcSHSJgkUwxIxHOmStA8y1Saypkk seems to me like he's implying that worrying too much about retirement is a lack of bitachon, and you can always figure something else out when you have to retire, which seems like the opposite of the frum finance approach

Rant and Idea... i know someone who has been very good about his maaser for the past 20+ years helping dozens of orgs and now he is between jobs and can't find any organizations to help him out. I was telling him, look at Chassidim, they give maaser to their Rebbe and they get cheaper tuitions because of it and when they lose a job the Rebbe helps them out so its like paying an insurance policy. I wish other communities would learn from this and find a way to pool together their maaser for those who need when they need it.

#budgeting Can anyone recommend (or for you creative programmers: write) a desktop budgeting program that functions offline? I know people who have very infrequent Internet access and would like to track their spending daily. (A way to use YNAB on a desktop when offline may also be helpful.)

I have a HDHP but have not yet set up my HSA. I received a bill for a medical procedure which I have not yet paid. Can I set up the HSA now, and then use it to pay for the bill? Can I set up the HSA, and then pay the bill, and later collect reimbursement? (I found this: https://www.chard-snyder.com/support-center/faqs/can-i-use-my-hsa-to-pay-for-medical-expenses-incurred-before-i-set-up-my-ac/ I'm just not sure whether "incurred" refers to the date of the bill or the date of the payment.)

Dr office wants me to sign the following: I hereby authorize and request my insurance company to pay directly to XXXXX MD the amount due on my claim for services rendered to me. I further agree that should the amount be insufficient to cover the entire medical expense I will be responsible for payment of the difference. Does this mean they're asking me to accept 'balance-billing' if they dont like the amount my insurance allows? The provider is in network with my insurance

After speaking with multiple rabonim of different haskhafas, I am sending this letoeles lerabim, if you live in a state that requires landlords to put your security deposit in an interest bearing account and then return a portion of that interest (I checked and MD and NJ require while NY requires if you own more than 6 properties), you have the full issur of ribbis chal on both tenant and landlord, assuming both are Yidden If you know any work arounds let me know, but I am personally sending back security deposits to tenants and re-writing leases until I hear otherwise. Speak to your rabonim, and talk to your friends who might own rentals for Yidden or Yidden you know that might live in Jewish-owned apartment complexes. As a separate issue that I want to be mefarsem, late payments for tenants that are not just one-time fees, for example, 50$ every day your late, is also a serious issur ribbis. Can only be a one-time knas. Please comment if you know of any heterim, workarounds, or other opinions, specifically only ones that fit according to state law. Not, for example, just doing your security deposit off the books.

What is the best way to store an 8-year-old's few hundred dollars? Is there such a thing as an interest-earning online savings account, with no annual fees, or is that just TOO much to ask for? 🤗 thanks!

💍 A Different Take on Jeff Bezos’ $50 Million Wedding!
Jeff Bezos recently got married in Venice in a wedding that reportedly cost around $50 million. Many people are outraged, calling it excessive and wasteful.
But let’s look at the numbers:
Jeff Bezos’ net worth is around $237 billion.
A $50 million wedding represents only 0.021% of his net worth.
    To put that in perspective:
👉 For someone to spend $50,000 on a wedding at the same ratio as Bezos, they’d need a net worth of $237 million.
Yet in the Orthodox Jewish community, $50,000 is an average wedding budget. But most people in that community don’t have anything close to $237 million in net worth.
    For example:
A person with a $500,000 net worth spending $50,000 on a wedding is spending 10% of their entire net worth.
    Compare that to Bezos:
Bezos’ $50 million wedding = 0.021% of net worth.
That means the average Orthodox Jewish couple is spending nearly 475 times more of their net worth than Bezos did, proportionally.
