Exactly, unconfirmed transactions are easy to double spend on BTC. It's not fud lol. It has beed done and that's the reason why a lot of merchants got scammed and stopped accepting BTC. Google it. Some accept it only through Lightning now. Of course, you cannot fully rely on unconfirmed transactions even on chains that have protections against 0-conf double spend, but you can at least be comfortable accepting smaller transactions instantly on such chains. Not on BTC though.

but this just means that the implementation of payment is wrong, you don't check for an unconfirmed tx and then say ok the payment has passed and the order is valid. This is a fault of the pay server rather than the chain

once the confirmations are in then process the transaction between you and the customer

aren't exchanges doing this for every single crypto deposit already? Even ergo has tx confirmations for deposits on exchanges

You are moving the fault to the users of the chain for something that worked perfectly fine before Bitcoin Core introduced RBF and didn't move up the block size limit as the transaction volume has reached it. See this, for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/3ze0sz/why_bitcoin_0_confirmation_transactions_are_safe/? It was ok accepting 0-conf transactions for smaller amounts before. Do you really think waiting 20-30 minutes to accept payment for coffee or hotdog is feasible? I'm not saying it's applicable in every scenario. For example, exchanges should not rely on 0-conf, obviously.

yes moving fault to the payservers is perfectly acceptable. a simple if clause can check for network confirmation when dealing with online payments as for paying your coffee, you use the lightning network, it's very simple here: https://github.com/lnbits/bitcoinswitch

with this base firmware for a controller you can basically do anything with embeded lightning payments

I think accepting 0-conf tx is a risk you're taking on as a business, it's not a feature.. the devs simply removed it

I think actually it's more than a single million, somewhere I saw a statistic that there's a million people who own at least 1 bitcoin so there's that

So you accept that BTC doesn't work for casual payments for goods and services? Great šŸ‘ It worked before though. You suggest to move the whole network of payments from on-chain layer 1 to centralized off-chain solution. It doesn't seem like a smart plan to me and I'm confused why so many people are comfortable with it.

Moreover, payments on Lightning network aren't trustless the moment the fees on layer 1 are higher than the payments. See this: https://link.medium.com/SEp0nMwl2zb In this case the users can be scammed because it's not feasible to close the channel in case of a scam if by closing it you would pay higher than the transaction itself. Because of this possibility, Lightning network payments weren't working recently when the fees on L1 were very high. The users of both Bitcoin layer 1 and Lightning network are effectively priced out of using them. Maybe they'll fix it in the future, but right now Lightning network is broken. See this for more issues with it: https://www.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/nxavqz/the_risk_of_the_lightning_network/?

Bitcoin not working for casual payments is perfectly fine, at least the l1.. I don't think it's meant for that. The lightning network is not centralized and is not off-chain. Upon a channel close the bitcoin gets settled. You can build your own lightning node and manage the channels yourself.

fees being high on the network due to high usage is fine as well. I think the miners were very happy
