Hey everyone! I’m looking to get a role in content marketing; strategy, creation and the whole she-bang! However, I don’t particularly enjoy writing🥲 I do it and I’m told I do it well but it’s not something I want to consistently do for a long time. On the other hand, I enjoy creating short form videos. So I wanted to ask… Is writing a huge prerequisite for content marketing or would companies consider hiring marketers with other skills?

Sounds like you would be better off getting into social media marketing, no?

Or employer brand and recruitment marketing!

Or a leadership / management position where you could set strategy and lead a team of writers? Best of luck! May you find a great fit

Hello! Not all of our members are guys. In an effort to be more conscious of the language we use to address each other, why not try “Hey, folks,” or “Hey everyone” instead?

Thank you! Sounds like it too but I’m worried about how someone can scale that careerwise?

To me writing and strategy are completely different roles that intertwine. A strategist shouldn't have to write and vice versa. One is analytical and the other is creative dominant. The only area of strategy that involves writing would be brand messaging.

Right! That’s what I thought too but most roles usually require expertise in content writing. Thank you for responding!

I would strongly recommend comparing different job descriptions and picking apart what's being asked. In terms of expertise, my understanding is they would expect you to know the best strategies to deploy for content (is it a blog piece vs a ad campaign etc) versus you having to write (which would be a copywriter). In my experience, that's what we'd lean on agencies for; execution of those deliverables you recommend

Speaking for our team, we were recently hiring for a content marketing manager position. We have a lot of strong writers on our marketing team already, so we specifically looked for somebody who would be able to add a new skill set, whether that was also having design experience, video, social media—just something else to help us grow our collective wheelhouse beyond the written word. Yes, they would need to be capable of writing occasionally, but we knew there would be plenty of opportunities in creating other content for writing to not be their main gig, so we specifically looked for what that other focus might be, based on their interest/skills. Content isn't just blogs anymore, and imo experience/enjoyment creating videos is a huge asset. Obviously not every marketing team may have this approach, but I'm sure we're not the only ones—good luck! 🙂

Hi @ripe-army-12023 I am a content marketing manager for my company but it becomes impossible to do all of this work on your own everything from videos and infographics to blogs and distribution on hosting platforms. You might need to hire separate teams for different design work. Like for video production itself, you will need an experienced team of scriptwriters, storyboarding artists, video editors, animators, voiceover artists, UI specialists, producers, etc. if you want to end up making a professional-looking video that helps you drive engagement with marketing. And maybe I can help you there. I work at Content Beta, a video production studio and we’ve helped ManyChat, Leadfeeder and 70 other B2B software companies create engaging product marketing videos to successfully generate more MQLs and signups. We are hassle-free, affordable and deliver fast. You can check out examples of our work to see if you are a good fit for you: https://www.contentbeta.com/video-examples/
