Looking for insight/help in what to quote a prospect. They have 42 blog posts that need polishing according to their style guide (and, from the look of the example they sent, also from an editorial standpoint) before they can go live. I do this all the time as a member of a writers' collective (and, of course, for my own content), but I've never quoted a client for it. What would be a reasonable rate for the project as a whole?

Culture fit is vital—more important than total compensation in my opinion. A company like this sounds like they have an established way of working and some set expectations for the role. Don't expect them to change or bend anytime soon. If you don't feel comfortable working within the expectations and culture there, then it's better to find somewhere that fits your style better. You'll be much happier in the long run. On the plus side, you have this job right now, so you can take your time finding something great!

Career advice question… I started a new job on August 8th. I already had planned vacation time prior to accepting the new job. The week vacation was September 13th week. I ended up working 3 days anyways due to migrations. Then, Hurricane Ian hit last week so I didn’t work the majority of the week. Today, I found out my grandma is passing in the next few days. I’m flying out to Buffalo tomorrow. My mom just got out of surgery so I have to help her get on the flight and drive her as she can’t walk. I feel nervous to ask for time off for this since I’ve taken so much time off. I wasn’t planning to tell my boss because I don’t want it to look badly on me. Should I tell my new boss? How do I approach this situation? I never take time off normally so this is a new area for me.

Career advice, I have just completed college/undergraduate study in History & International Studies & I've realized that a postgraduate study in the field is a waste. Why? I can't possibly land a great role in the Nigeria govt without paying my way into govt offices or networking with politicians or someone influential. I don't have the resources and connection. I decided I'll focus on content marketing, which I've always loved. I've been writing for five years now, & it's been three years in content marketing. I have learned and experimented with B2B content and although I haven't landed my dream roles (writing for known agencies/companies), I'm increasing my skill set & preparing myself for it. Since I've zeroed my mind on pursuing postgraduate studies on something related to int'l relations, I thought about MBA in Digital Marketing. It's where my question lies: 1. Many don't study MBA to be recognized as an expert, do you think it'll be a waste of time esp when I learn a lot from industry podcasts, blogs, newsletters, & social media timelines of experts? 2. I'm interested in leaving Nigeria because I'm not eligible for many remote roles that fit into my portfolio. Studying abroad could take me out of the country, but I'm second-guessing that an MBA may be a waste of 18 months or so. What do you suggest I do? BTW, Relocating without an MBA scholarship is freaking expensive; it's not something I can afford right now. 3. Do you think I need a degree to be a reputed content marketer? Of course, I'll pursue certifications from industry academies & experts, but a degree? Thank you.

Hey Superpath community, Looking for some experienced eyes and editing/honing from one of you. I’m applying for a Managing Editor position and was curious if anyone with Director/VP+ level Editorial/Content experience would be willing to review my resume/cover letter with a Managing Editorial hat/eye and help me really hone it? I asked b/c many resume optimizing people — even the really great ones I’ve used like Adam Karpiak — have never hired for this kind of role and don’t really know what it takes/what they’d be looking for in the shoes of a VP of Editorial or Content. I’m happy to pay you for your time, of course. Does this match up with anyone’s experience or skill set? If so, let me know what you think would be a fair monetary exchange for something like this (DMs are fine). And lmk what kind of availability you might have to take a looksie.

Hey team! I'm a content writer at Paperform looking to do a bit of professional development since my company so kindly supports it! Does anybody have any advice on which online content writing courses are "worth it"? In addition to Superpath Pro courses, which are great. I write mostly content for small to medium businesses in the tech/SaaS space, but I'd be interested in learning about different niches. Thanks!

You can break out into blocks on your resume and call out work you oversee vs. work you do hands on. That’s easy. The challenge will be whether some employers would question your management judgment and ability, because if you’ve been doing IC work while being paid as a mgr, then you’ve essentially been overpaid and have been wasting company and team resources. You might be better off making clear in your application that you want to step back and do more IC work, without over emphasizing your current IC work. Personally, I’ve hired some managers who’ve wanted to step back from managing. It’s never been an issue for me or my managers to understand why some folks might want to do that. One of our writers at NerdWallet, for instance, had spent many years in high-level roles, overseeing large teams and operations, and no longer wanted to do that.

Hi, I'm a digital entrepreneur and content writer. I've been self-taught in many things digital since 2015. I have worked with many clients who sorted my company's services during this entire time. Recently, I started offering content writing services on Fiverr and met a client who hired me to work for his digital agency remotely as me (Freelancer). I do a lot of things for them: • Write client content with Jasper Ai. • Build and maintain WordPress websites. • Build Click Funnel pages. • Setup Zapier automation. • Set up conversion tracking on their websites using Tag Manager. • Manage Google Ads, Meta Ads, and Linkedin Ads. • Set up Google Analytics. • Set up Google Search Console. • And many other stuff. Too long to mention I want to create a CV and venture into Remote work fully, but I don't know what I should call myself. I am unsure how to package all these since I have never had a CV. I need guidance and a clear direction on creating a CV/profile. What should I call myself Digital Marketer? Web designer? How can I better group these services?

Hey everyone! My question is targeted at the people working in the US — how hard is it to get a job in a company based in the US that is fully remote? The catch is that I’m from the EU myself. Is it more time consuming and difficult to hire people outside of the US vs getting someone to work remotely for you from outside?

For some reason during the time I’ve looked for new opportunities, the only ones that stand out to me happen to be US-based, but I’ve no prior experience in working outside of the EU (or in decentralized companies, where it’s a little different).

Tailor your resume toward the growth outcomes, and frame content as the central plank of it. For example, paid ads need creative refreshes which are content after all. From there, it’s the usual stuff if you’re cold applying: try to find someone on the team to refer you, get certs if you can

Hi all! I'm in the interview process for a Lead Content Marketer role, and was invited to a final round interview where I'll present the take-home exercise the hiring manager assigned (and has already reviewed.) Anyone have tips for knocking take-home exercise presentations out of the park? (The format for this one was a few slides where I wrote a mini blog post for them, and laid out my thinking for why I'd tackle this particular topic for their blog.)

I accepted a role as director of content for a startup and 6 months in, I'm not feeling as badass as I did in the beginning. I'd love some feedback/insight into how you all view the role of director in today's market and any advice you might have.

I suggest you avoid cart before horse: 1. You need to suss out whether they’re interested in filling or creating any larger role. They might have other priorities if there have been layoffs and might have no interest in doing as you hope. I’d allow a month or two for stuff to settle after layoffs, before raising such questions. Why: The company just went through something traumatic. People need to catch their breath. Plus, if there are needs or gaps that make such a role necessary, they’ll start showing up and you can point to them. 2. If you find out that they are interested in No. 1, then you need to find out what that role would look like and what the requirements would be, agnostic of you. Why: Companies usually create roles to meet their needs, not to meet someone’s career goals. 3. Only once Nos. 1 and 2 are clear would I even bother considering whether you’re qualified or can persuade them to give you such a role. FWIW, if you want to lead, you’ll be better qualified if you increasingly think through problems in separate layers or steps. Why: 1. It’s hard to problem-solve optimally when looking at issues in big, hairy balls. 2. Not only would you have to be able take things apart for yourself, you’d presumably have to help guide others and help them problem-solve more effectively and such.

Hi everyone. I'd like to pitch a real estate company about editing their Instagram copy. I'm wondering how to word the email so I don't sound critical or condescending. Any tips? Here's what I drafted: Hi there, I would like to discuss how we can make your copy more appealing to your target audience. I read the copy on your Instagram page and I believe it can be reworded to appeal more to your target audience. For example, the carousel title: “6 features to look out for at Fairmont Green and Smart Estate” can be reworded as “6 reasons to be a Fairmont Resident” or “6 reasons to Love Fairmont Green and Smart Estate”. Let’s have a chat at your convenience to discuss samples and pricing.

Okay. I am looking for a support group! I onboarded at a very small startup about a month and a half ago and I'm building their whole content program from scratch. They had 5 blog posts with no strategy before I arrived and they wanted a very ambitious content strategy. I've spent the last month creating a strategy, getting the ball rolling on a few exciting and big content projects, helping with a complete rebrand and a 100% website refresh, hiring freelancers to help with a very ambitious video and social media strategy, and creating system after system after system to help with scaling. It's fun. It's exciting. There is budget for help wherever I need it. But everything is such a big lift right now and I can't delegate until I define what I need and have an example to point to for things we're outsourcing because we're still defining our voice. We have no marketing ops support -- which is our next to do. It's just two full-time folks. Me and the VP of marketing. And everything I do takes five times longer right now because we realize that things aren't working with X or Y (published a blog post by our engineers only to find out that our CMS doesn't have functionality for code snippets -- we're getting a new one next week thankfully but trying to solve for that took two hours alone one day!). Someone who has been here... please tell me it gets easier! Lol. I just want to get our program in place and running smoothly and have content ready a week or two before and not to encounter unexpected bugs. lol. I am finally outsourcing my first content program next week -- our employee spotlights (which we're doing a lot of because we have 30 open positions -- we are a 43 person company so it's a huge growth period) are going to be done by our admin person. I cannot wait to get more off my plate!

Looking for some freelance advice... All of my previous contracts have been by the hour, and I have an awesome client opportunity come up that would be project based. I would love any advice around how to price projects & delivery of a Scope of Work. My first 3 projects will be a Holiday Marketing campaign (social + giveaway + emails), Rebranding (doesnt have cohesive presence or messaging), and a social strategy for the rest of Q4 + Q1. Super grateful for any conversation around putting together pricing/estimates around project-based work!

Possibly a silly question, but is there a difference between sending work samples (e.g., in response to a query) and linking a portfolio? In the past I've always shared the portfolio on my website (which is fairly general), but I've been asked for work samples a few times lately and I'm not sure I'm sending the right thing!

So I have been in this situation for a long time, and I think this is the best place to seek advice. I wanted to keep a balance between my freelance career and my agency, and I couldn't do it. I have focussed mostly on my agency in the last few years, and because of that, I haven't really taken on many freelance projects that are good enough to show to a new client. I have done the kind of projects that were fun but they were different from the kind of projects I want to work on—like creating a content strategy for a friend's business or writing ad scripts. But here's the problem: if I want to take on a blog writing or copywriting project now, I don't really have any recent articles to show. What would be your advice here? Shall I publish a few articles on medium or another platform to refresh my portfolio or try approaching clients with my older samples (which are from a few years ago)? Or there's another way to go about it. It's a long post, I think, so thank you for reading. I would really appreciate any piece of advice. Especially if you have been in a similar situation. DMs are welcome too!

Would anyone be kind enough to critique my cover letter, resume, and pitches? I think my pitches are most of my problem, although tailoring my information specifically for writing may help. I’ve landed interviews without it though. Most of my submissions and pitches don’t come back!

Has anyone made the switch from content marketing to product marketing? I’d love to hear about your experience. And any PM-related courses you recommend? I’m realizing ~8 years into my career as a content marketer (mostly at startups, meaning I did a bit of everything) that the things I love most about content marketing are actually more related to PM—messaging, positioning, case studies, customer research, and competitive analysis—and I’m looking into making a formal switch.
