Any Github Copilot users have any recent feedback? Does cfscript still suck?
a
I don't have it running on this machine, sorry, but here's a picture of a superficial test that is quite telling: https://paste.pics/fb1e7b9ea86af4192026a9e54099abdb
So... it still sux. It doesn't really get that CFScript is not JS.
props for using
local
though.
(makes it better than about 90% of CFML devs in that case...)

Theres probably just not enough cfscript to scrape out of github to train it. Our shit history of open source contributions are finally catching up with us as a community.

honestly, i'd rather have to modify js to cfscript than tags to cfscript at this point. still not ideal.
s
It's been working pretty well for me, but you do have to double check the syntax for sure. It'll make up random functions that don't exist.
e
is it still having issues with html in a cfm page mixed with outputs and loops.
s
I mean, there will always be issues because it isn't perfect, but I would say I commit maybe 60% of its suggestions on average (when I let it actually suggest to me). I find it most useful for doing the more repetitive tasks because it's pretty good at seeing patterns and realizing you're going to do something similar to what you have before.
e
thats probably the best we can hope for i guess.

BTW @Adam Cameron it does help that CFML has been adopting more and more JS functions and syntax. Not what you want to read, I'm sure, so just direct your hate mail to

or

I'm actually largely on board with the innovations Adobe have been making to script-based code in the last few releases. They could do more, but I'm liking it. Just a shame we are not having this conversation a decade or so ago.
If Adobe (well: Macromedia started this) had a language architect (is that a thing? Someone who knows about language design anyhow. Ping @seancorfield), and had stopped piling more and more tag-based functionality into the language back in perhaps 2002 (CFMX 6), CFML would be in a far better place now. Also separate "language" from "application server features" better than they have done. Probably two separate teams, with separate goals & mindsets. But they didn't. Ah well.
s
I agree that CFML missed the boat a while back and is just in a catchup game that will never end, but I do also appreciate the attempt to move forward. Maybe you aren't the ColdFusion Asshole after all @Adam Cameron 😘

Don’t take that away from him.

No one would ever dream to.

All I can say in CFML's defense here is that it had closures and data structure member functions like map/reduce before Java did, and it's had some reasonable metaprogramming features for a long time too (e.g., onMissingMethod(), the ability to dynamically add methods to objects, the ability to add metadata to components).

I'm using it (as are many of the Ortus team). It does much better with Java, but I've found it to be still quite useful with CFML though.
s
Makes perfect sense given the level of usage of Java over CFML.
m
I've had better luck with Codium. It does a fairly spooky job using your own code in a smart way to "see" patterns and make suggestions. So for brand new projects it isn't as good, but on existing codesets it has surprised me in huge ways, in a couple cases actually preempting a dumb logic error I was about to make (which I ignored, made the error and went back with my tail tucked lol)
s
As another data point, Copilot does really well with JS (and TS) but not so well with Clojure -- another niche language -- although it's pretty good at generating test-by-example code since that's often somewhat boilerplate-y (but it can't figure out
)))
a lot of the time!).

Neither can I @seancorfield πŸ˜‚

Cfscript has always sucked, and copilot is still like a meth addict when trying to use it in cf.

Helpful and constructive as ever... πŸ™„

Come on Sean, I think we can all agree that the one true proper language is Objective C. Every other language is just dreaming of rising to that high standard. 🀣

Take any file that is mostly javascript, mixed in with CFscript then run it through Copilot. It becomes a mess, Copilot wants to fix all your "javacript" errors, namely "CfScript". Add further to the confusion, Run it with any kind of screen reader.
e
Luckily I never have to deal with inline js
