what, pray tell, is the attraction of LV? (recognizing that this question comes from someone whoโ€™s not a big fan of LV)

There is literally no other place where we can have the event. I tried. Really, really hard. Simply put, for the size of the event, the number of hotel rooms, the cost of the space, the availability of the space, there's no other location. I tried Sacramento. I tried SF. I tried NY. I tried San Jose. I tried San Diego.
I spent weeks.
Because I too HATE LV with a passion.

But I had to concede, there was no other way to go if we wanted this event to go off, especially this year. We are doing Adobe Learning Summit & CF Summit in parallel.
That's way over 1000 people who need hotel rooms, food, meeting rooms, etc.
I literally never leave the hotel myself. I eat there, I attend the stuff, and when it is over I get the heck out of dodge.

sigh. i know the whole conference planning thing is a nightmare. hypothetically speaking, if you held it in Cincinnatti, we could gorge ourselves on goetta, good chili, and Graeterโ€™s ice cream. and good beer, although not necessarily all at the same time. and as a bonus, if it is during the fall, thereโ€™s a good chance for a brawl with drunken bengals fans on a sunday afternoon. i know fed conferences (which tend to be very cost conscious these days, having been caught in some high-profile shenanigans 10+ years ago) have been there recently with events larger than what you noted there.

Yes well if we were going to have it somewhere I would have it in Sacramento lol.
But, no chance. It would take 3.5 hotels to hold everyone.
Which is a non-starter. Never gonna happen.
We can fit EVERYONE into the Mirage.
r
right, but who wants to go to sacramento? ๐Ÿ™‚
m
Um, who wants to go to Cincinnati? You guys eat chili weird ๐Ÿ˜›
(I actually love it over spaghetti myself)
r
you mistyped that: we eat chili right

In any case, Vegas sucks, but misery loves company and there's no one else I'd want to be miserable with than the CF community in Vegas ๐Ÿ˜‰

As much as I hate Vegas, there's a reason so many conferences are held there. San Diego only really works if you do a conference at the Convention Center (and it has to be huge to justify the costs) and then you have dozens of hotels in walking distance that can be used. There may be other conference centers down there, but the largest hotels are all concentrated around the Gas Lamp district (next to the Convention Center).

So it's going to be held at the Mirage? I couldn't find the venue but see Mirage mentioned for the kickoff party. Also, what time does the certification workshop wrap up? Wondering if I'll need to book an additional night's stay?
m
Hemi, last year we had a HUGE class and it wrapped around 5pm. But keep in mind, you have the choice of either taking the test there or waiting and taking a proctered test online. I highly recommend the online version. The stress and exhaustion is going to make the test harder in the class. We offer it because some people just want to bang it out, but I've seen (literally, watched it happen 3 weeks ago in DC) people just break down after so much info, plus having just traveled, etc. Saw a person fail who I would bet money on passing if they'd just waited and done the test at home. So theoretically you could finish the course at 5pm, hop an Uber and be at the airport for a 7pm flight. Personally though, I hate cutting things tight like that. I'll probably either be staying extra days or maybe driving down again and going camping in the mountains right after to relax a bit.
h
Cool, thanks for the info Mark. I appreciate it

I did the certification last year in Vegas. I had a 7pm flight out, so it was definitely a close shave and very stressful. If I had to do it over again (and I guess I will next year), I'd either stay an extra night and fly out in the morning or do as Mark suggested and take the exam online later.

I would also add, the class is going to be PACKED this year. Sign up now. I'm thinking it will be around the same as 2016, when we needed 2 instructors (and probably should have had 3). DC had a total of like 180ish attendees but we had 30 people take the course. The sooner we get signups in place, the smoother the experience will be for everyone. I don't anticipate us "selling out" but if we fill 2 rooms it might get dicey finding a third instructor. It will be good to know if we need one.

@Mark Takata (Adobe) , I hope this new licensing model is either bringing back an offline licensing option or incorporating a locally hosted licensing server. Organizations that require extremely secure environments will not allow unlimited outbound access to AWS to accommodate the online licensing communication. This online requirement blocked our cf-2021 migration for almost two years.
m
Steve, yes, those pain points have been heard loud and clear. It is critical that we ease the burden of licensing on our customers overall, but especially in cases where the licensing server model is an issue, such as serverless, WAR installations in containers, high security/offline scenarios and the like. Security is getting tighter, not looser, in both government and corporate. This requires us to adapt and put the burden on ourselves to ensure both ease of use and proper licensing of CF.
