There is one thing I have wondered about for a long time: why are directories sometimes named <cpu>-<arch> and sometimes <arch>-<cpu> ?

Sorry I must have missed this - the naming was decided long ago by others so I cant really comment on why it is the way it is. Generally it should be <cpu arch>-<platform>
