I am having a hard time figuring out how to price my actor and if I need to make drastic changes to the code of it and thus the reliability (my focus has been on making the scraping as reliable as possible) to not either incur a lot of charges myself or having to pass alot on to my customers - None the less I have these queries: - According to the calculator I have a majority of customers that apparently pay rental for the actor but don’t run the actor. I have apparently almost 70% customers that have not run the actor last month. This would come out to a loss of about 60% I can see. How can I compensate for this loss when switching to PPE? - Also how can I prevent losing money on some of the higher tiers (I can see break even is highest for my Silver tier) regardless if they have a high volume? - Do I need to set a high actor start to compensate for the fact that the site I scrape has heavy bot protection that at the very least require a browser to pass bot detection? - Does Apify additionally deduct a commision as was done with rentals? - Also if my operating costs result in a net negative will I just be deducted the PPE income or will I also incur charges to my credit card to offset the costs? - Is it perhaps a possibility to have a 1-1 DM about the migration? Other than that the calculator is complex but also quite nice. Thanks for that.

Great questions, @Casper - thanks! - One of the main limitations of the calculator is that it can only give you comparisons of costs and revenue when all other behaviours remain the same - in other words, if your Actor becomes a lot more popular because people can run it for the results they need rather than having to rent it, you might have tons of very low-revenue customers which add up to a lot more. It's just hard to predict this so we don't try. However, most devs have found that they're seeing fairly consistent, if not significantly improved revenue by migrating. - not sure what you mean about losing money on higher tiers, these are usually more profitable for you. "Losing money" could mean a lot of things and I don't want to speculate in this context - feel free to DM me if you'd prefer to discuss privately. - Apify deducts 20%. - We don't charge you for negative revenue on your Actors but we will get in touch with you about consistently negative revenue as it signals to us that you need help somewhere. Hopefully some of these responses answered questions you have and others moved you closer to an answer. My inbox is open if you want to continue the conversation with more specific details.

Hi @Ella Thanks for the details. I will delve a bit more into them and contact you in a DM with the remaining questions.

Most high-volume actors now work without browsers because it is much cheaper and faster that way. There is now the new UNBLOCKER proxy that should be still cheaper than full browser + residential so give it a try. Plus Claude is already pretty good at reverse engineering websites to use few HTTP calls without browser. That way to can set nice pretty and retain good margin. but only do it for higher volume Actors where it pays off. Generally, transition to PPE means; - You loose revenue from zombie users but that was shady anyway, we had bad UX for rental cancelations - You mostly loose revenue on very low volume users. But you can have many more of them since there is no high entry bar - You can make multiples on higher volume users. One big customer and you can make thousands which wasn't possible with rental. - You get more users because there is clearer pricing and no entry cost
apify-actor-start
event is adviced because is handles all edge cases and developer mistakes where you forget to charge and could lead to forever $0 runs that drain your profit. Once you are confident that your Actor is correct and predictable, you can drop it to simplify pricing. In any case, this should not be high. It should be a tiny number (less than 1 result) just to cover invalid or spammy inputs, low timeouts etc.
"Also how can I prevent losing money on some of the higher tiers " Ofc you need to set pricing that you are profitable even for highest tier while still giving some volume discounts. Most public Actors have really good margins over compute.
