the unack messages will not be persistent, the unack messages means the messages are delivered to the consumer but the consumer did not acked yet. If the consumer is closed, the unacked messages will change to 0 because no messages are delivered to consumers. Another metrics is backlog, I guess this is the one that you are looking for?

@Penghui: Yeah I know about msg backlog but i wanted to understand unack message count. Also what can be the maximum value of unacked_messages_timeout_ms and what will be side effect if we set it higher like 2-3 days?

If the message has not been acknowledged within the unack timeout, the message will be redelivered to other consumers.
