its not like this server has a community
s
I'm a bit shocked at this comment. But at the same time I would like to learn more about what you think is lacking at the moment.
t
a reason to talk here and active moderation, doesnt seem like staff here is actually trying to get normal conversations going from my observations
s
What do you consider normal conversations?
t
but then noone responded/tried to make a conversation
s
Ah I understand now
On the moderation side, what do you think is missing? we have been trying to moderate as much as possible without making the discord feel like a hostile place, but would love to hear your thoughts on what you think we could improve in that department.
t
probably try to get people to use the appropriate channels and possibly make support use a thread bot
s
Ok thanks for your feedback, I will share this with the rest of the moderation team and try to make this a better community.
t
Also personal opinion I would ditch mee6 over anything else
c
oh mee6 is fine although it doesn't usually seem the most professional. Especially given that supabase is the perfect platform to host something like a discord bot on
so it would be a great showcase of "hey look we run our own discord bot on supabase"

I would like a bit more strict moderation as well. I don’t like the tone @tricked used but I appreciate that this topic was brought up. Here is a couple of examples from yesterday that I would consider on deleting the messages and giving the users a timeout/ban for further offenses. These feel spammy and I think they hurt the quality of the discord server. I get that you don’t want to be rude but I would argue that it’s ok to be strict to people who do not write useful or respectful messages. https://discord.com/channels/839993398554656828/839993398554656831/987407333208518656 https://discord.com/channels/839993398554656828/867348150741237790/987444071503118386

i feel like help vampire is a term that should be more widely known and behaviour that falls into that category called out
but yeah some stricter moderation is absolutely nessecary
a not active but actively moderated server is 100x better than just a mess that nobody wants to engage with
t
its not hostile to remove annoying people help vampires πŸ‘

Hi Thanks you for your feedback all! I will try to be as transparent as possible. As a moderator, we have a lot to deal with, including things that go on behind closed doors. Remember that this is a part-time role, and we do our best to be available for everyone, while being available for our other tasks (school work as student and internship the whole day in my case). We try to answer as many questions as possible in the #843999948717555735 channel, try to improve the server as much as possible (see changes in #951830581354844170), and try to keep a friendly atmosphere. I understand your frustration that this channel is somewhat "dead" regarding normal discussions, and know that this feeling is shared with the whole team. If I can reassure you, actions are already planned to this effect, in order to involve the discord community, and from next Monday! Concerning the reinforced moderation, you should know that I'm going to abstain following a problem I had with a member (entirely my fault, but I don't want to repeat this same mistake). Adding discord bots is indeed something that could be nice. We are working on some bots in the background, including one that will allow us to organize office hours, and other similar events. Several channels in this discord are not used enough, and we are working on them.
c
nothing to do with the message. just wanted to compliment you on your Kung Fu Panda quote in the about me πŸ‘Œ
o
Oh thanks :p
c
top 10 movie lines of all time
o
Because i'm someone really spontaneous, i think this move line is the right for me, that's why :p
c
but yeah. We understand that you guys have active lives and this is not your livelyhood however even slow moderation is good as long as its enforced. That means deleting messages or consequently directing them to the help channel
also disabling the creation of threads in the general chat will help to that effect. Even if it also stops things like this occuring
o
You're right, disabling threads in general is a good idea. Still need to see if all mods are agree, but it can change a lot!
t
consider using needle for threads in the support channels
o
We already do! :p
t
only in a couple πŸ€”
o
Only in the #843999948717555735 channel
t
i feel like it could fit for them all
c
Honestly i think only #843999948717555735 is fine
i like threads but they block the conversation and cause moderators and people helping to swap channels constantly
especially with a very quiet server threads don't improve the experience much since its usually going to be one person at a time anyways
if it gets so busy that 3-4 people are asking for help at any given time then threads are absolutely the way to go
but as it stands i think the important point is the strict seperation of channels. Only help in the help section and keeping the respective help topics to their respective channels
but honestly i am just happy you guys provide a discord server at all
o
You're totally right, and you should know that this reflection has already been up for a month ago now, on 06/05/2022 to be more precise. Here is my personal answer that I gave at that time: > The purpose of #839993398554656831 was initially to simply chat about everything, without any topic specific. Sometimes i don't ask to people to ask in #843999948717555735 because their question could be asked in general as a general question, but i see more often people asking about something specific but in #839993398554656831 and not #843999948717555735 > Honestly, i don't know if we should let this channel anymore, because i don't know what could be the purpose of this channel
c
nah you always gotta have a general channel
in terms of successful tech discords i cannot point to discord.js enough
JS libaray to write discord bots
has probably close to 50k members and is never quiet. Dispite them having several dozen help requests at once they still manage (due to a large amount of contribution from the other users)
they have a no bs system where asking stupid questions quickly gets you a bot command reply that points you to the reading you have to do before you can properly get help
they also have a dedicated command just for pointing out when someone is a help vampire and how to get help without making it a problem
o
That's interesting! We have a similar "auto command" stuff, which is #885237287280070708. It's not a real "auto command" but it does the same job πŸ˜†
Please note that I finished my studies at the beginning of July, which means that I will be much more available on the discord, and you may not be ready for what is about to happen πŸ‘€
