This was also my main incentive for using Dendron (apart from the promise of speed and scale). I suppose technically Foam comes closest - given that it's also a VS Code extension - however I am experimenting with migrating to Obsidian and it's perhaps not super hard since a lot of the spirit is the same, and in fact you can continue editing long-form notes in VS Code and use Obsidian for the views and filtering.

I am so sad about the news regarding the dropping of Dendron's dev. Is this an absolutely definitive decision ? Are they any ways that this amazing project could be retaken at one point in the future ? What could be the conditions ? Dendron is a tree. Branches can be cut. Tree can hibernate ... but they live long.

Q: I have been defining several custom note traits. I am working in a multi-workspace setup. I would like to force notes created by a specific note trait to be written in a particular workspace. Is that possible ?

Foam is far away from Dendron. Especially if we talk about the "Refactor Hierarchy" of Dendron. Exporting around 1k notes from Dendron to Obsidian makes me sad and infuriated. From changing to "folder note", then to edit the internal linking and image resizing css tag to Obsidian-favored markdown syntax. Currently, my most frequently used feature (note-taking and publishing) of Dendron are both stable and polished. There is no equivalent free publishing alternative in Obsidian that is on par. I hate to move out of Dendron. But I forced myself to make the switch, before the notes will be accumulated excessively. As smo said, my best hope is the promise of Kevin to maintain the current features. But without the enthusiasm of community (smo like ScriptAutomate with his tutorial to publish on Netlify), I doubt that Dendron will be buried in the dust of time.

Something that has worried me about Open Source and also private projects is the longevity of the projects, because an ideal knowledge system that remains for years, that's why I've avoided closed solutions, but even Open Source projects we don't have this guarantee either, however the source code is open. It was tending to MediaWiki before, due to its visual editor, while the Dokuwiki editor when we edit, it is stuck to the editing block, in MediaWiki it is not, it just goes to the right position, but we can still go up and down low. But of course there is no feature similar to Outline or TOC in editing mode as in Dendron, which we can go to the position of H2, H3, H4 and expand or hide, in addition to include and other excellent features.

Do you intend to continue with Dendron or are you looking for other options? I also consider Mediawiki, due to being a large project over 20 years old and the largest wiki system, I will not have all the advantages of Dendron, much less Markdown :(, now it also has some very interesting resources and plugins and in the end almost every knowledge system uses Wiki concepts. Another option that has remained valid for more than 20 years and is a reference is the Org Mode of Emacs, I consider it easy to be the best system of tasks, documentation, knowledge, etc. of Emacs, I'm curious how nobody ever thought of creating a system based on Org Mode 100% online and modern. Now when I used it I liked it a lot, too bad the format is very particular too, but Pandoc supports it and Hugo also supports it.

I've also used Obsidian, but it is closed source code and the editor I prefer VS Code, it seems that less content fits on the screen or it's printing. Another is Logseq, but here it is a little slow, but it is constantly evolving, it uses the Outliner concept of Org Mode, it even has a bit of Org Mode in it.

Hi simple question, less to do with status of the project but how to use it; as I’m new. How can I centrally view all my todos that I write across various pages ? I’m struggling to understand a simple todo workflow Can I write todos on daily journals and transclude them across days; and when I mark as complete it propagates back?

The only ways I know of are https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Gruntfuggly.todo-tree, or using tags for todos.

Hi i have an issue with dendron and i dont know how to fix it. When i open the vs code and change the current location and then go back to the location where i have files from dendron, dendron does not activate i guess? And my notes look like this:

My first reaction is that you can't because that isn't how markdown works. This isn't a Dendron thing, it is a markdown question. I would google for
    markdown checkbox in table
    , etc.

I checked githubs repo with issues and still nothing works or can it affect that, for example, as I write
    - [ ]
, the dendron does not catch it, and if I choose the options from the menu to create a checkbox, it works normally

Excalidraw for VScode in Dendron doesn’t work like Excalidraw in Obsidian, does it?
  • m

    02/15/2023, 2:13 PM
I can only make drawing from a prenamed Excalidraw specific file; I can’t invoke the creation of a drawing whilst in a note I’m writing; and I can’t embed an Excalidraw environment in my note; like obsidian

These seem like huge limitations for using Excalidraw with Dendron

Hey everyone, applying a template to an existing note, takes too much time and sometimes needs to be applied twice. Has anyone else deal with this behavior?

Anyone know why these aren't showing up in my Dendron view? They were showing up yesterday after I refactored them as a hierarchy from under learningReact into root.bookMenu ?

remove the part “root”, use only “bookMenu”, “bookMenu.animation”, … All notes are children of “root”, but u cannot use “root” in the hierarchy. It’s what i remember

Has anyone tried using a Dendron workspace 'remotely' from one partition, when the workspace is on another? I take notes on two different OSs via vscode, with dendron extension on both, but the one which is the 'remote' system can't open it cause of some json error thing, even though the filesystems are the same. Will post again later with the exact error.

How did you configure the export? There's some yaml configuration, right?

Pretty good for online documentation or for collaborative note taking

    Should I commit
    .dendron.cache.json
    to git or ignore it?
  • s

    ScriptAutomate

You should ignore this. If your gitignore doesn't currently exclude it in some way, you'll want it to. I think new workspaces get initialized with an entry in gitignore that should be excluding files like that

Yes. It’s straight forward. I just follow the dendron wiki of export pod v2
