without diving into this more, I'm a little confused. The "Refactor Hierarchy" should preserve all backlinks. Is there something in the Zettelkasten method that you could refer to please?

The problem is that using Refactor Hierarchy i cant get accordingly changed names 1a, 1a1, 1a2 to convert them into -> 2a2 , 2a2a, 2a2b. I only can convert 1a, 1a1, 1a2 -> into smtg like 1a,1a,1a (they will be all the same)

as part of the process it made me wonder why not use this Hierarchical system for all files on my computer (well at least the files i want to file, archive, store etc

Im playing with the reverse direction. Converting all hierarchical notes back to traditional file-folder structure to start a new experience with obsidian publishing 🤣

what were the downsides of the hierarchical notes that you decided to switch back?

Had it been launched as separate app rather than vs code ext. maybe it could have gained more popularity. I still can't believe it won't be developed anymore. 😄

What are you using to convert the notes?

Kevin and his team will still be using Denron internally and promised to keep on top of any breaking changes in VSCode.

so what one should do now? stay or try to find another tool? the truth is that dendron as an extension of VS actually made VS something like emacs. you could write, code etc all in one place (almost). same keybinding, same gui.

Markdown export pods v2 to convert the hierarchical structure to file-folder markdown notes. Then playing with python frontmatter library to edit the fm in bulk. https://wiki.dendron.so/notes/Un0n1ql7LfvMtmA9JEi4n/ https://python-frontmatter.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html

No downside from Dendron-type notes. But Dendron has its own favored of markdown syntax and also publishing structure, which is absolutely awesome. I’m just afraid to maintain my pkm in an abandoned software šŸ˜…

I'm hoping as well as Kevin's promise to maintain it we can round up enough willing geeks to do a community maintained version and Dendron won't be considered abandoned šŸ˜…

Yeah. Such hope would be the best current scenario, considering the fact that Dendron has more features than its peer (ie. Foam) https://foambubble.github.io/foam/

Yes, this. It is awesome to have my R script, Notes and PDF's open in the same program. Makes working on research much more convenient. I tried Emacs, and it is an awesome program, but the learning curve was to steep for me. Maybe eventually.

Other than the hierarchical notes aspect; are there other features Dendron possesses that would set it apart?

    Refactoring is awesome.

    - Refactoring commands - Dendron's Lookup: I can hop around to things very quickly/easily with the way the Lookup works with finding note and making new notes - Schemas in combo with templates - VSCode extension: I'm able to use at work, and know others can use it at work with me or other companies, because VSCode is software they are able to install or already have - Multi-vault: Dendron's multi-vault support has been the major one for me. Especially with the newer format they implemented that threw stuff in
    dependencies/*
. And the ability to config settings so that you can select what vaults a note is made in, or moved to, etc. This helped a lot with being able to use multiple vault sources for me (personal private vault, personal public vault (website), work private vault, shared/team work private vault, dendron site/wiki vault, etc.) - Pods: Dendron was working with the idea that interoperability should be important. I've been working with someone that uses Dendron at their work in a pipeline that documents their infrastructure and services. Users/contributors can view and navigate docs via the extension, and other users can view markdown export pod generated docs that are rendered into an Azure DevOps Wiki. Whatever tool I move to, I'll be looking at making an exporter that works similar to how the pods were being approached with yml config files. Dendron currently does everything I want it to do, with just some bugs and features that sometimes get in the way. This is what will be hard when looking at other tools out there. Ease of use, speed of retrieval/creation, etc.

One thing that's keeping me from switching completely is that Dendron works (decently) in a github.dev workspace. I spent a bit of time today trying out Foam with different web-enabled extensions but none of them really worked like I wanted them to. I know Foam is working on web-extension support but until that's ready I can't really switch.

Little python script did the job. Someone posted one on the Obsidian forum they used and it's fine. You'll want the Folder Note plugin obsidian too https://forum.obsidian.md/t/any-plugin-to-import-dendron-vault-into-obsidian/47060
