Funny enough, that's exactly how I've felt about Atom for years, @brimwats. When I started trying out VS Code a month or so ago (precisely because Dendron seems so promising), my partner was floored. She's always used VS Code & I've always used Atom. What's holding you back from writing academic papers in it? I've been doing Atom -> Pandoc -> OpenOffice or LireOffice since at least Bloomington, so I might have suggestions if you have specific frustrations?

@User this is one of the many reasons why i ended up building dendron inside of vscode instead of doing a standalone ui. vscode is a feature, not a bug πŸ˜…

@foureyedsoul I honestly don't know, I think it's just the visual of the white printed paper view? it's not even the theme, it's like the print view in word? but that view also makes it harder to get started when it's a draft πŸ€”

What I do like about Word is the cognitive ease of print-view style WYSWYG. Having consistent digital UI more consistent with paper UI. On the reification axis of [Idea in your head β†’ What you type β†’ Digital version of the idea β†’ What gets rendered β†’ Visual representation of the idea in digital formatβ†’ Your idea on physical paper], something like Typora and Word is one step closer to how I envision notes in my head, in the format of A4 paper, and because of that, can be less cognitively demanding to use. I also like Word's pen input that adds a layer of svg on top of the document. Why I like vscode more is everything else πŸ˜… .

Interesting for me it's quite the opposite. Separation of content and presentation helps me to focus. In Word I'd start to fiddle with formatting and so on

i like minimal presentation elements (eg. bolding and syntax highlighting) that help me parse information faster. the rest I only resort to when sharing my work with others that don't feel the same way πŸ˜…

I like paper formatting because I end up printing some of the notes to use as references on my desk and wall, and also sending to to my Ereader: the notes can leave the computer. I'm a huge fan of how Markdown with syntax highlighting and inline image preview hits the sweet spot.

Speaking of which, vscode needs inline image preview! (sublime has an extension)

What would be a good tool to use to model conversations/connections between two people?

I was thinking visually, mindmap with central node representing each person.

And mapping out broad topics > subtopics > specific interests > specific alignments as you find connections with each other

Eg "what do you like to do for fun?" -> outdoors > get to know each other favorite trails > get to know each other's significant others and their schedules > "hey we should go hiking!" > set plans and details to hike

I'm looking for a tool to help me and plan when's an appropriate time to have certain conversations. The visual structure should model a relationship, and I want to input specifics.

CRM software is too clunky to use, I want to be able to use it on mobile and have an easy at a glance UI

sounds like an excellent use case for a full-on graph database like neo4j, but im not sure of any UI for it

I have this as an important use case when Dendron gets conceptmap ui in the graph view, with branch folding, drilldown, creation of new note nodes, and drag and drop refactoring of hierarchy. Id really appreciate something in the meantime though.

@User argdown is good for doing flow-chart-like modeling https://argdown.org/ there's also a vscode extension for it: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=christianvoigt.argdown-vscode

i would compare emacs org-mode to vim - it'll take some upfront investment before it makes sense but once it makes sense, it'll be hard to use anything else

First off, I'm so happy to successfully publish!!! Definitely going to share once the place is ready for company. Also, tested the instructions from https://www.dendron.so/notes/84e01690-4ea0-4b71-8cc4-c2d38e09dcf4.html ... I was just curious what people would recommend to support single $ delimiters. I could write a python script for this but.. that's not the solution I'm hoping for. I'm actually running into a similar issue with sending LaTeX through VScode-Anki. The question is, without experience with JavaScript extensions, can I pull-off a search and replace for the delimiters I want to swap?
