I've had a bunch of people ask for examples of how they could use Dendron so I made a video of me planning a camping trip 🏕️

@User heads up that backlinks to named wiki-links are now supported. you need to update the dendron-markdown-notes version to v0.0.15. see [here](https://github.com/dendronhq/dendron-template/blob/master/vault/dendron.upgrading.md) about upgrading (replace dendron with Dendron Markdown Notes)

hey, so i I just found out about Dendron and I've been using Obsidian. @User do you have any thoughts on Dendron vs Obsidian? My initial look seems that the features are pretty much 1-1 with the exception of being a plugin on VSCode and opensource vs standalone/closed sourced

Hey @User Feature wise, obsidian and dendron are fairly compatible and the obvious differences are what you already pointed out about vscode and open source. I would say the main difference is that dendron has schemas and hierarichal lookup. backlinks are nice but you still need an organizational structure on top as you collect more notes. dendron provides that organizational structure as well as tooling (coming soon) to keep it managable (eg. refactoring hierarchies and filenames and updating the links everywhere)

gotcha, ok, good to know you're still committed to building it. I'll give it a try.

sorry to turn this into a feature comparison convo >_< I know how hard it is, I work for a company that is built on top of an open source codebase

all good, this is how we get better! what do you mean by updating links?

backlines link to file names, so if you change the file name, all the backlinks will be renamed also

You're awake. I just want to say that I find Dendron very interesting bacuase of all the hierarchy concepts you use in the system. I like Yaml and Schema and the concept of chunks. I didnt know about these things

and thanks. i've been using these concepts to organize my notes for the past ten years and its the only way i've been able to stay on top of it

It's great you have used these concepts by yourself. I'm a Philosophy student interested in Language and Hermeneutics and these concepts are theoretically interesting for me.

Tomorrow or later, I'm going to ask you what I have to do for using the schema, becuase in the Quick start file it says Schema is optional
  • k

    07/28/2020, 3:41 AM
yeah, the documentation on schemas is a little light - i'm adding more docs and better support for that this week and next

and kudos on philosophy! took a few courses in it back in the day. the reason schemas are interesting from a philosophical standpoint is that they, at least to me, represent my mental model for domains of thought

a good schema is basically a good mental model - it helps collapse the information space so instead of having to think of everything, you can group related concepts into chunks and also find how chunks relate to one another
