It's a VM that just has VSCode on it for testing. I mean, maybe it has something to do with the VM but it's a graceful shutdown so it's not the VM crashing or anything

IIRC this happens for the test versions you can download without buying a license. Could that be the reason?

I wish purchasing stuff at my work were that easy. πŸ™„ We have to get quotes from different vendors and we mostly can't pay with credit cards.

Well, content addressing (https://docs.ipfs.io/concepts/content-addressing/) is a powerful upgrade to the existing idea of WWW. Instead of linking to addresses in an archive, one links to the hash of the content. Eventually, instead of copying things to my notes from the WWW, I host my own copies, a local cache, of all the sources that are *transcluded *in my own notes.

One of the students who work in my college's Writing Center just said on chat "I keep all my textbooks that I can because I'm like a dragon with knowledge and books," and I immediately thought of my notes in Dendron. πŸ˜… I think that's a big part of why I appreciate Dendron so much: it lets me keep an organized hoard of knowledge, with enough structure that it's all close at hand instead of just gathering dust, and with nearly zero mental or physical penalties for constantly increasing storage. πŸ²πŸ“

Nah, you aren't alone! πŸ™‚ When it comes to users of Joplin migrating, you can run a search in our discord for
    joplin
and you'll see a handful of users popping up, including those who have mentioned it in their #734966064957620294 as part of their journey to Dendron

Yeah, looks like we have a little note about it here: - https://wiki.dendron.so/notes/f9b4fc21-7613-4c8a-9257-cec4c06b67f9/#joplin We also have the markdown import pod, which takes all your markdown docs and imports it into a dendron vault: - https://wiki.dendron.so/notes/f23a6290-2dec-45dc-b616-c218ee53db6b/ Depending on your experience, I'd love to hear how it goes. We could maybe extend the migration guide to include more info

I've installed dendron but I don't see this "scratch" note concept anywhere in my menu, templates, or otherwise. The cmd+shift+s shortcut doesn't do anything, and doesn't exist in my list of keyboard shortcuts. I'm reading this https://wiki.dendron.so/notes/5c213aa6-e4ba-49e8-85c5-1bdcb33ce202/#scratch-note and I have the button, so I can create a scratch note that way. Am I missing something?

Hey! By default scratch notes are a "modifier" in lookup -- hover over the 3rd icon from the right after pressing Cmd/Ctrl+L. If you want to be able to open lookup with that option already set, you can bind another key like this: https://discord.com/channels/717965437182410783/735365126227493004/929317112730755112

yeah, this isn't immediately obvious because scratch note is a modifier. in the near future, we'll be promoting it as its own command for discoverability, same with journal note @User

The page I linked to above says that there’s a shortcut cmd-shift-s to create a new scratch note. I don’t see that anywhere. I’m talking about creating notes. Maybe the docs are out of date? Or ahead of the code?

Yup, lookup is used to create new notes that don't already exist too. I think that default keybinding may have been removed because of a conflict, I'm not sure when without digging through the release notes

I've spent an unreasonable amount of time talking to various Apple support folks about a very annoying macOS bug that causes my external keyboard's layout to change in mysterious ways on an M1 Mac running Monterey. Anyone else seen this before? For me (British - PC key layout) it's causing the key to the right of shift (\\) to be swapped with the key to the left of the number row (`), and Keyboard Setup Assistant to recognise all key presses from external keyboards as key presses from the laptop's own keyboard πŸ˜•

I've been trying to avoid it, but I'm very close to giving up on macOS altogether. After a couple more hours of troubleshooting I've noticed that my mouse is also detected by macOS as a keyboard. You can see this if you open System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard > Modifier keys and look at the keyboard dropdown at the top. I'm hoping that by setting the same keyboard layout for my mouse (wtf Apple, really!?) it might work now. macOS is the worst operating system I've ever used πŸ˜‚

Also bizarre: why does pressing modifier keys when on the Input Sources tab of that preference pain sometimes change your keyboard layout? None of the 4 support reps I've spoken to today could answer that question 🀯 (pain is right, not correcting that)
