Glad you're enjoying it mate! Personally not an Apple fan, but really respect their drive towards innovation. You might also want to checkout https://frame.work/, I've been salivating over it since announced but sadly since a lot of my interest is in 3D modeling/Game design, lack of dedicated video is a dealbreaker... As a tiny aside, how's the keyboard on the newer Air's? Last time I was laptop shopping was right when they kinda downgraded the keyboard, so curious if it improved.

Before this machine I had a Dell Precision 5530, and before that one of the really old XPS models before they switched to the wedge design. Given the choice I'd be running Arch, but Intel's current generation CPUs just don't fit the form factor I want.

The keyboard's pretty great, they've dropped the butterfly design and gone for a good old scissor switch design now -- it's a slight improvement on the 2014 MBA. I'd also pay extra to have a row of function keys over a buggy slab of glass, so that's a plus haha

Aye, XPS was what I ended up going with and, well, It'll be the last Dell product I ever buy given their poor quality control. At the time though it was really one of the only choices for battery life/screen quality/dedicated video, Aaaand then Lenovo launched their X1 a month afterward! -_-

Nice, glad they improved that at least! I admit their 'slab of glass' was certainly attractive...but um, not practical for my uses anyway.

Aaah I really wanted to like the X1 Extreme but the quality control on the first generation was so disappointing I went to the distributor and asked for a second machine, and when that came with the same display defects I gave up. There was a lot of light bleed and discolouration on the upper corners of the displays, and the thermals were... Intel 😓

Yeahh, I had three tech's over to fix my XPS, but also heard about Lenovo's quality control being a bit bumpy there...I'm pretty sure they were good on repairs though? Always had fun arguing with Dell to enforce the warranty I paid for. "If I wanted to ship it to you, I'd not have paid for on-site!" >.>

Same on the Dell front, but I always found their Premier NBD/on-site support pretty good tbh -- it's a lot more convenient than AppleCare. Lenovo seem to make a distinction between repair and replace, and for new purchases they'll push for replacements. What put me off Lenovo was the support experience and the expectation that I'd pay for the replacement out of pocket while they processed the refund... I wasn't impressed

Ya know what, I have NOTHING bad to say about their actual on-site contracted tech's, they were super helpful, the one good thing I can say. And yeah that makes sense, personally I always prefer a replacement than repair, but totally get why you wouldn't appreciate that. Seems we're past the age of things 'just working'. -_-

Inkscapes most recent stable release has the most abhorrent memory leak I've ever seen in a project this large

I was sitting over 18 gigs yesterday of ram. Learned it had something to do with moving objects on their grid system, but also apparently just moving the dropper tool around with your mouse at all, increases memory storage by megabytes. So you can just be picking colors off other objects and suddenly you're out of memory

switched to the unstable release but its only available in snap packages, and opening documents on arch with that just causes me to crash. Lame

A bit sad that Inkscape is pretty weak among the three big OSS graphics software (Krita, GIMP, Inkscape). Last time I checked, Krita was amazing, and GIMP had some features that other proprietary alternatives couldn't offer. Inkscape was horribly behind with their UX design. Luckily I don't do a lot of vector graphics so I didn't really have to find an alternative for AI anyways 😅

The way I understand it is that Krita is for digital painting, Gimp is for image manipulation, and Inkscape is for Vector graphics. Gimp and Krita, Gimp being better than Krita for it at the moment, and Krita having just implemented the ability to do it, but neither come close to what Inkscape is capable of in that regard

that being said, Inkscape isn't illustrator, and Gimp isn't photoshop.

inkscape isn't bad IMO. Granted I wasn't using it at a professional level, but I used it to design character sheets for a homebrew RPG and it worked well

If I'm making a design in illustrator, and need to do some touching up for presentation in photoshop. I can jump to photoshop from illustrator no problem in terms of UI and hotkeys.

with Inkscape and GIMP it's like, If I need to do a touch up, I'm slamming the keyboard trying to get my hands back into GIMP mode

I cannot get the sync to work, so I think that I am going to switch back to obsidian.
