yeah, that might be a good idea. could you submit a feature request? unfortunately, it doesn't seem like codium is making any progress on the git issue πŸ˜₯

So, way back, I wanted to learn Emacs just so I could use org-mode to "track my digital life" (and get some hacker cred!). Back then, Ubuntu was my daily driver and I was enthralled by all things clickity-click. I took Emacs for a looong ride (knowing nothing about lisp or programming in general) and eventually got sort of good using org-mode. But after the 1000th time fiddling with my .init file at 2am, trying to get some packages to play nicely, I gave up. It was just too hard to learn the "emacs operating system" πŸ™‚ . Fast forward to today, I'm on windows (whatever) and have been using VS Code to learn Python for a couple years. I started to learn about the Extension ecosystem and what could be done with VS Code besides coding. It hit me that what I was trying to do in Emacs years ago, may be doable and more approachable in VS Code. I've now got ~50% of the functionality I wanted from Emacs org-mode stood up in VS Code (obviously Dendron is a HUGE part of my workflow!). But... There are 4 things (so far) that I have NOT figured out / aren't available in VS Code: - Executing code blocks within markdown files - Email from within text editor (not possible on Windows) - Browse the web from text editor - Whiteboarding from within the text editor

Maybe someday we'll use our text editors as the only program on our computers; the one that can do everything (write notes, draw diagrams, screenshot, encrypt text, spreadsheet, track time, create presentations, code(!), and even take voice/video calls).

I mean, VSCode is electron and electron is a browser, so you could probably write an extension to browse the web if you wanted to. I don't think it would be too difficult, although you'd probably hit some security limitations of VSCode

Ah, to be expected! I imagine one could still write a text-mode browser, maybe even with javascript support if you just say YOLO and
    eval
the javascript on the pages πŸ˜„

Its quite amazing how Lisp was able to handle all kinds of use cases in Emacs!

this is going to be a controversial thought but automatic backlinking is bad for notetaking and linking notes in general. it's like highlighting paper notes - it doesn't do anything for making connections in your mind.. it only feels like you're doing something good

everyone loves to talk about luhmann's zettelkasten, but they all forget that it was a physical note slip-box system that he took time going through and organizing by hand. i suspect that if his notes had automatic backlinking in them he would not have gotten as much use out of it

automatic backlinking just gives you the false sense that you're doing productive work, that your notes are important somehow... but unlinked notes that float in the ether (e.g. checklist notes (to-do, task list) don't have to be linked to be useful) are also as important as linked notes)

i also think that the slip note boxes were hierarchical, even if unintended..

that does strike me as something that people ignore oddly often about zettlekasten - that the sequences in Luhmann's system are hierarchies

he filed them away and group them within others.. that is hierarchical

connection quality definitely seems much more important than connection quantity

yes, as well as the notes themselves need to be written in your own words.. copy/pasted, pdf printouts, web capture, etc. should belong in a separate area
