I always created a vCache app layer for formatting the cache drive, setting the Event Log redirection, and setting the pagefile on my PVS images.
1. Create the app layer 2. Shut down the packaging VM immediately 3. Attach your second disk to the VM, power it back on 4. Initialize and format the disk, assign it a letter (change CD to another letter if your images have one) 5. Configure pagefile and event log stuff 6. Finalize the layer in the packaging VM 7. Delete the disk on the packaging VM before you finalize the layer in the ELM 8. Finalize the layer in the ELM

Yeah, and I forgot a step. I also used to use the layer priority utility to set that app layer as the highest priority, though that was likely unnecessary.

Can you clarify steps 6-8? Do you detach the disk before running the finalize script on the VM?

Step 6 is clicking on the Finalize button in your packaging VM, where it runs its tasks and shuts down the VM
Step 7 is removing the disk that you added in your hypervisor
Step 8 is actually completing the finalization from the ELM web console

so after clicking finalize the VM reboots into layer process. Do I remove disk after that?
because after the machine gets deleted

its alot easier if you just use the d drive. You dont have to do anything.

yea so creating layer did not work (I probably did something wrong). Disk ID does not carry over and drive maps to D

"When you double-click on "Shutdown for Finalize", let the machine shut down" For some reason when I did this in the app layer it rebooted into layer build process instead of shutting down. Something new in the latest layering?

the shutdown for finalize name was from before offload composting

So I probably need to "catch" it while its shutting down and detach disk...

As long as ghe disk id is learned it will remember it

Good news. I followed the process in the CTX article, created platform layer ver with cache disk, manually set the signature and all other bs, then ran the script but caught it on shutdown and powered off machine. Disconnected the disk and powered machine back to finish the image. The cache is now in its proper place, event logs and page are there too 🙂
