I’ve done Platform
k
So have I
But I talked to Jim Moyle a while back where he mentioned the same as Rob Zylowski
l
I've done both previously. It makes no difference really.
k
the thing with the filter altitude
j
Yep same
About filter altitude
d
you're talking about Citrix layering? why would anyone use that?
j
Hey it’s not a silver bullet but works for some use cases
n
Hey now, I'm actually a fan of it. 🙂
And yeah, I've made the filter altitude change in my current layer.
d
only use case id see is if you had a ton of images to keep straight or something...
j
Yep lots of images and no automation
w
And you bill by the hour
n
I can’t even remember the last time that I built a non-layered image. If Citrix ever figures out how to cut down the login time with elastic layering enabled, that’d be huge.
r
Yep lots of images and no supported automation
j
@Ryan Butler automation was they have no automation to support current image management
r
oh my bad lol
j
Lol
@Webster Webster app layering should be teach them to fish, not do everything for them.
d
ive never had more than a couple of images to maintain, so app layering would do me no good
n
We only have a couple of images on the desktop side, but quite a few on the XA side. Ironically enough, I moved forward with Layering in XD but our XA admin hasn’t had a chance to really dive deep into Layering yet. To each his own on this one.
d
i messed with it when Citrix first acquired it, but didn't see any value add for me (mostly pvs environment)
n
It started out as a fun exercise in new technology (to me, at least). We really wanted to utilize elastic layering, which was our main focus. I’m so in deep with it now that I don’t think I’ll go back. We’ll eventually expand our offering enough for this to be a worthwhile adventure in most people’s eyes.
That last reply makes me sound like a robot.
a
@Nick Panaccio I'm with you on app layering. We have a client that uses it and it works well. 3 images using same OS and Platform. Just a few different baked in Application layers for Power and non Power users. Then we have 20+ Elastic layers for different internal departments. Login times on average with Full User & Elastic Layers are around 30 seconds.
n
Out of curiosity, what version of App Layering are they on? I haven’t given elastic layering a shot since 4.15ish because it added 40+ seconds to the login, even with no layers being assigned elastically.
a
They are on 4.17. What are you using for profile MGMT? We originally created the ENV with Citrix UPM we had long login times with elastic layers enabled. That's why we went to Full User Layers. Currently testing FSLogix.
n
Currently UPM (7.15 LTSR CU2), but moving to FSLogix in the next month or so. I know what I’ll be testing tomorrow.
Elastic layering still adds 30-35 seconds to the login time for me, so that's still a no go.
a
That's interesting. Where are your elastic layers stored in compairison to the VDAs from a network perspective? Is the File Share in the same location as the VDAs? I wonder if there is an issue attaching the Elastic Layer VHD to the VDAs causing the long longin times.
Are you using PVS or MCS?
j
Are they user or machine assigned? Machine assign and pre seed if possible.
n
PVS, and this occurs without even assigning any elastic layers. Simply enabling it in the image causes the slowdown.
a
Gotcha, we are using MCS. Here is an old CTX Article witch you may have seen. The last Paragraph is classic Citrix. https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX230812

n
I'm intimately familiar with that article, and still chuckle at it. I spent months trying to narrow down the issue, going so far as to building as vanilla an image as possible with no AV or anything else, and it didn't change a thing. I'll keep giving it a try with every new release (Windows and App Layering).
