Depends on the published app requirements. If only lean on what it needs from a roaming perspective, then UPM makes a lot of sense to me, if you want containers instead then it’s a seperate container location. My trigger point for containers is published desktops be it vdi or sbc where user experience consistency is critical

Thanks James, very much appreciated! UPM would be cool for the second hop to keep the profile size minimal, however the app zoo is huge on those servers and fiddling around and isolating all those exclusions probably isn’t worth the savings of storage - I think I will go the route of a second container, maybe with some basic exclusions through redirections.xml there - but basically I‘m done with managing those user profile stuff, throwing everything in there and paying for the storage seems still cheaper to me than spending hours and days to isolate all the roaming prerequisites.

Yep agree with @James Kindon
Redirect what you can and use two profile containers if UPM isn’t an option.

It’s funny with upm.... for years it’s been (for right or wrong) include everything and exclude junk to ensure everything works... when trying to make sure just one or two apps are consistent, it’s not much overhead in management because now you are simply grabbing a few included locations and ignoring the rest - different ball game. If you are happy with containers though and storage is no problem then it’s definitely not a bad option that’s for sure - lean upm will have a performance edge

If you only want to save app settings, you could use UE-V.
j
Yep that’s another good route.

Thx all, thx Aaron - great article I stumbled upon already of course :) Since we are dealing with lots of different learning apps in education - many of them really outdated, non-standard, written for ancient operating systems, etc. I fear it would be a daunting task to get them working with UE-V. What might work in our setup is to use the concurrent access to the container where the XenApp servers mount the container as RO profile and discard all changes on logoff. Needs some testing but might work for us.
b
@dready in your double hop, do you have desktops and apps in the same or separate delivery groups? I’m always curious about double hop use cases. In my environment, we’ve worked hard to avoid double hope scenarios.

@Brandon Mitchell main workspace for the students and teachers is VDI, there’s most of the basic stuff like Office, browsers, etc. available. For everything else they launch the published app from within their VDI, in example to use Adobe Creative Cloud, Mathlab, Autodesk (running on GPU powered systems) and tons of smaller learning apps. Our strategy is also to use thin clients for the school owned endpoints, maybe 90% of those endpoints are linux TC connecting the users to a Windows 10 virtual desktop.
b
Ah, if you’re using VDI for their desktops and RDSH for apps, even though they are both v6 profiles I’d recommend separate FSLogix profile containers.
