Yes, we're doing this. When I get to the office on Monday, I'll see about grabbing the config and posting it. Not sure about IE add-ons, we specify only a few that can run in our environment. Might be helpful anyways.
d
Thanks @Tim Riegler that would be great.
d
@Tim Riegler - did you manage to get this config - seeing the same issues here with a customer
t
Working on it gents - we're in the middle of a 2016 deployment debacle at the moment (slowness, profiles not working, WEM not working, etc.)
got 1000 pissed users, and some REALLY pissed helpdesk staff
d
Oh so it’s not just us that happens to! 😆
Looks like i've come up with something. Used a reg snapshot tool to get a list of reg changes that occur when setting ReaderDC and AcrobatDC as default PDF handler (Edit\Preferences\General). Unfortunately they're all HKLM not HKCU. So created each set as reg keys in a new reg path (HKLM\Software\_FSLRules\...), then used FSL redirection rules to redirect to the relevant group of reg keys based on AD group. App, Outlook preview and IE tested. Seems to work so far but will know more tomorrow... Open to further\better ideas! Can share what i've done so far if it helps anyone.

sounds ace !!!

@David Inglis I'd be interested in seeing what you've come up with, I've run into a similar situation but still have an issue with the default message popping up when right-click >print from explorer.
d
Contains 2x .reg files and 2x FSLogix rulesets.
@Bill Nickerson Hopefully self-explanatory. You'll be able to identify the original reg paths from the .reg files (I've adjusted the paths so i could import them to the 'dummy' location as you'll see). Then the two rules - the rule called 'hide_adobe_reader' does just that but also sets the pdf defaults to AcrobatDC. And then vice-versa. Hope it helps.

Awesome, thanks for sharing! 🙂

@David Inglis Does printing from explorer work in your environment? Right-Click > Print a pdf from explorer. In mine I get a prompt asking if I'm sure I still want to use keep using an app when acrobat DC is hidden.
d
@Bill Nickerson Ah yep i think i had that. Try setting HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\NoNewAppAlert =1 (DWORD). Stops Windows from prompting that message. Users can still change FTA by right-click, open with, etc.
I also set FTA using SetUserFTA (https://kolbi.cz/blog/2017/10/25/setuserfta-userchoice-hash-defeated-set-file-type-associations-per-user/) via a WEM action (using same AD groups i use for the FSL masking rules). However - i have a feeling this might not be necessary with the FSL Redirects i'm doing now.
b
@David Inglis Thanks for that but unfortunately it didn't work for my issue. However I think I figured out a fix. The key at: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\AcroExch.Document.DC\shell\Print\command was pointing at acrobat, changing it to point to Reader fixed my issue.
t
@David Inglis do your rules handle the Adobe PDF printer? Ours hide it, and the event logs are throwing a FIT over it. Wondering if you're seeing the same?
d
I’m afraid not @Tim Riegler sorry, we don’t hide PDF Printer.
