Same here
r
I had the same issue.
n
never had that, shouldnt matter as far as FSL is concerned...
b
We even set the cached Exchange Mode settings in office GPO and it still won’t honor it
n
ah wait, i never set that policy in FSL. i just have the outlook gpo set to use cached mode with 6 months just as it was with UPM. perhaps the 2 are conflicting. maybe use one or the other?
b
We set the office one after the FSL wasn’t found to be working
According to FSL outlook is supposed to be configured for online mode which it was prior to adding in FSL
n
you're using o365 for mail right?
b
Yup. Ivanti is being used for personalization
n
i personally never saw that rec'd, however i can't imagine why you'd want to use online mode, it'd be slow as hell grabbing mail across the wire all the time. even with my laptop i use an ost. citrix and MS published a paper to use OST's with UPM due to cloud thing, so i'm failing to understand why FSL would think it would be ok to abandon that practice.
b
Sorry the docs say outlook needs to be in online mode for the setting for cache mode on container attach to work.
Basically if it’s in cache mode this setting isn’t needed
n
here's the citrix paper -
m
my challenge is to configure Outlook for first session using cached mode and subsequent sessions in on-line mode
r
Curious why only the first session and not all sessions? Just wondering not to challenge you.
n
Me too. Perhaps after the initial sync it’s just deltas after that. I have to do 6 month limits. I can’t afford to cache 50gb mailboxes for hundreds of users.
m
...hundreds of applications in use, sometimes in server silos with requirements to use mapi-mail functionality. Citrix content redirection for mailto is not that reliable. VHDAccessMode = 3 (per Session container) is costly with thousands of users...
r
I see so storage is ur issue. Meaning space. Which makes sense. The Citrix PDF was a good thing a time ago. But as you aware they(Citrix) have their own outlookvhd mode now. Which is ok. But fslogix office container is a better choice for Search indexing in my opinion but fslogix has way to many settings to setup and it's confusing and misleading with the verbiage. So for example when u configured cache mode. It's creating a OST file. So the pdf says to use. NoOst ((online mode) but how can u do that when cache mode is set?
n
Waiting for citrix to release the search indexing for server 2019. Currently not supported. Once that’s done I’ll be set. I agree. FSL needs better verbiage in gpos. I still don’t understand why they would recd online mode. Can someone explain that to me? It would seem to me that’s not ideal for user experience.
n
Ok, so the reason why they recommend NoOST=2 (online) is simple. When the container is successfully attached, then FSLogix will spoof that value to 0 (cached). Should the container not attach correctly or FSL be disabled, it will use online mode, why, cos otherwise Outlook would cache all email again, into their session and onto the local file system, which impacts the launch time of Outlook.
d
We interpreted it as the FSL setting would tell Office it could use cached more (ie. un-greys-out the tick box in Outlook) and then we use GpO to actually enable the use of Cached mode per user. We set the ZeroConfigExchange bits so the first user logon is hands off and always in cached mode. Works well for us so far. Server2016 with FSL.
r
Yea I understand that. What Im confused about is.... It states us cache mode and vhdacessmode 0. Then it say must be NoOST =2 . That's doesn't make sense to me.
Nevermind it just clicked it see now. So the cache mode ext is temporary while the container is attached. Vhdacess mode 0 means onky 1 use at a time. Resulting back to online mode and the Outlook still opening. Ok so what confused me is it's saying set 2 GPOs one for cache mode and one for no OST. Which if your ready it your like hub, what? The documentation needs to explain a bit more. Example Create a number 4. Explain that the two GPOs are needed and yes it sound conflicting but fslogix will do it's thing. Perhaps I'm slow lol as well and most understand this.
n
You’ve got it!!
r
Lol thanks
