For physical?
j
Yep, laptop estate 😲
Because the OneDrive folder is part of the profile, I think this might cause it to go mental.....but not sure
l
You just broke my brain!
j
Client has a G: drive currently where they store the %APPDATA% folder, a bunch of other redirected folders, and all the user's documents as well. They want to move all of this to OneDrive instead. So I'm trying to work out the best way of doing this - obviously FSLogix would have many benefits, but deciding what should go where is the weird bit......
l
Sounds cool. If my brain is up to it I'll have a play later. I feel a presentation coming.
j
Yeah I'm going to have a faff with it too, if I can get myself a spare minute
a
Does the user really need to roam the entirety of their profile?
j
Not really but they want to roam Cookies, Recent Items, History and various other bits within the OneDrive section - wonder if I could just redirect those locally to OneDrive? Or would that cause it to go mental too? I just thought about the whole profile because it might be easier - not sure it is though
a
Windows 10 Enterprise edition? If so, use UE-V
j
So use OneDrive for data and UE-V to spaff their config settings out to the OneDrive folder?
j
Yep that sounds like a good idea for UE-V for settings. Also OneDrive already has an option to backup documents, downloads, etc.
p
You can specify a custom location for the OneDrive cache, I'm not sure if this can be outside of the user profile. This might be doable now there is a Onedrive system wide installer? (just off the top of my head)
Also - your OneDrive is stored (ala Sharepoint) on a SQL DB - It's designed as file storage, MS can send 'backoffs' if the comms are too chatty.
also is the cloud cache feature not a better place to host this (i suppose OneDrive is a free chunk of storage though) It would be better if you could somehow leverage the Onedrive storage utilizing Cloud cache.
j
Key requirement for the client is decommission their storage and move everything to OneDrive (which they're already paying for)
FileDirector would be the better weapon of choice 😉
j
That would involve paying money 🙂 not an option
l
How'd you get on with this James?
j
I didn't, yet 🙂
l
Okay cool, so as I understand it. You want the profile disk to be stored inside the OneDrive? So we'll not redirect the OneDrive and instead simply have OneDrive login and sync?
j
yeah, the key is they want to use OneDrive for all the storage
l
I see.... wont the containers be quite large?
reading from the top again
j
I've seen some big ones but 100GB or so seems to have been the biggest
l
I need to draw some pictures I think, this feels a little like inception.
j
ha
l
I am pretty sure sure storing the whole profile wont work just a bit of testing.
from*
I did put some redirection rules in place to put certain things in OneDrive, that works fine.
j
Yeah OneDrive folder is in the profile, so I reckon that would send it into some sort of vortex
l
I tried placing the VHD file in OneDrive which is okay but on my second logon it didn't attach. I think this gets messy with files on demand
j
Yep timing issues
l
Makes sense, a profile with a profile container in it. lol
