@James Rankin I remember you mentioning something about FSLogix and masking shortcuts??
j
Is the shortcut in %allusersprofile% or local to the profile?
j
there is always a delay in the start menu reflecting that change of access - its an index, so the white icon identifies that the masking rule is working at a file system level, but the index is delayed in updating - you should find that if you log off and back on it updates appropriately?
j
Yep
l
Interesting.... So there is a command to reset the start menu, let me dig it out. You may be able to hook that in their to reload and the timing might add up.
b
Shortcut is in c:\programdata\Microsoft\Windows\StartMenu. We have a WEM action that rebuild things (at least I think it's working) and if I do a refresh from the WEM actions it doesn't fix it
j
Command to reset menu?
j
intrigued to know what that command is - i have tried killing the shellexperiencehost, explorer, all sorts of fun with no luck. I have managed to corrupt it enough times that i dont bother trying anymore 🙂
l
tldrecover -resetcache
Pretty sure it forces a start menu reload.
There's a few other switches to reset and re-register the start menu when it completely falls over.
b
It's a WEM External Task assigned to Everyone to kill SearchUI.exe. PowerShell.exe -command "Get-Process -Name SearchUI | Stop-Process -Force"

j
hmmmm I dont think that will help with your index... @Leee Jeffries that is for tiles i think, and most of that handling has been deprecated now for newer OS
l
I've just been trying to get more info on the syntax and I'm seeing it's been deprecated. Microsoft have done a great job of screwing the start menu release after release.
I've been using Ivanti recently and it doesn't manage start menu tiles at all.
j
I've never heard of that command tbh
b
I’m glad there is no ivanti. I still have nightmares of that product
l
Basically when you've got into a situation where your start menu is broke you can run C:\Windows\System32\tdlrecover.exe -reregister -resetlayout -resetcache
I was really surprised how similar it is to when I used it a few years back.
b
I’ll give that a shot and see if it does the trick
l
James is probably right. As the shortcut is provisioned but the target and therefore icon is missing. What you could do is add an additional hide entry in your rule for the actual lnk file if not already done.
j
yeah it's there if your tiles are screwed - wont touch the left hand side of the start menu (as far as i am aware)
b
This isn’t a tile. The fslogix rule set has a specific rule for that shortcut it’s just not fully applying it.
j
you can always change your app masking rule to hide the actual directory as whole, also make sure WEM isn't trying to add a folder with the same name into the start menu (user profile portion) with an exe that it can't reach (check application existence)
AppMasking is doing it's job by the sounds of it, if you cant get to the shortcut, it's done what its supposed to do
b
I’ll look at WEM as we did have some actions for start menu creation I thought I cleaned up. Yeah the files are all gone just the fargin start menu shortcut
Time to bust out classic shell 🤣
j
the index methodology for Start Menu typically creates some head scratching
b
Time to build my start menu as a service company
Bwaha
j
tis called james-rankin.com
b
It’s pretty sad he or anyone has had to right so many articles on how to manage the start menu
l
Exactly. It's so difficult to manage in its current state.
j
it's all good if you make it basic - default start layout with basics = tick, appmasking for start menu everything else - tick - WEM for the gaps - tick - keep it simple and things are OK for the most part - still way harder than it should be 🙂
l
I was just about to say. This is not simple but.... It's as simple as we can make it right now ;-)
j
I am extremely sad 😉
