@Stefan Beckmann Seems like you are the man 🙂 My problem: I don’t have enough space at the moment for creating a duplicate disk for every FSLogix container. We are speaking about 3000 UPDs. Is it possible to use the UPD .vhdx with FSLogix?
l
I can answer that one. Nope. You can't use the upd for FSLogix. Can you do groups of users at a time? Can you use storage de-dupe on your fileserver?
j
Yes it will be for sure a group migration. The client needs to purchase new Datacore licenses because no more capacity at the moment. This will take several weeks.
l
Cool cool, know a bit about datacore. My experience was using it as a relatively cheap San. Is it hosting windows file servers?
j
Yes it is hosting a virtualized MS File Cluster on VMware
l
Cool. Turn on data de-dupe on that fileserver, put the same FSLogix VHDs on there. Schedule de-dupe processes out if hours and migrate slowly. If I can help let me know dude.

I think the client is already working de-dupe. I am just doing consulting for the Citrix part. FileServer/Storage is another story.
l
If that's the case then you should be okay to me be forward slowly without increasing the storage too much anyway as the vhd contents will be the same.

@Leee Jeffries have you got real world results there? I’m not 100% convinced that dedupe will work equally well across a VHDX and a UPM profile. I’d like to be wrong though
d
We only use compression on the container share, I guess dedupe (at least on Nutanix) doesn’t help with VHDX because it works on file level.
l
I've used it previously guys and it does save space. Not necessarily as much as machine clones but in this particular use case it should let Julian move forward. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2012-R2-and-2012/hh831700(v=ws.11)?redirectedfrom=MSDN This being said reading through, I was doing this on standalone file servers with de-dupe enabled and all my users logged out each night for de-dupe to work.
@Aaron Parker re-read your message, Julian is using UPD currently. Not UPM. My thoughts were that saving would be similar between the two VHD types if migration is done over time.
j
Correct I was referring to User Profile Disk. Is it possible to use UPD & FSLogix on the same machine? I know you can mix UPM and FSLogix for migrations. My guess is that with UPD this will not work 🤔
l
To the best of my knowledge no that wont work as your be mounting a vhd path into a vhd. @Bronson Magnan wrote the migration script I believe. It's worth looking that that. What you can do is separate the two with user groups.
a
OK, yeah I’d expect similar dedupe b/w FSL and UPD.
UPD and Office Container can be used on the same machine
I think I had a customer using both on the same machines and targeting via user group
l
Cool man, I'm glad we're on the same page ;-) I had some beers with @John Gallacher last year at a CUCG he said you definitely knew your stuff ;-) that and all the scripts and info I use from your site. Looking at using Jekyl maybe....

Trudat! :)

Yes the use of UPD and 0365 Container is possible I have done it before. Thanks for confirming that a mix of UPD/FSLogix Profile Container is not functional
b
I migrated from UPD to FSLogix. Beware to not update FSLogix first, as newer versions of FSLogix do not play well when mixing UPD and ODFC.
If you want script, I can send, it was adapted from another persons script. Since it was not an original work, it is not on my github.
But if you want to backup FSLogix profiles stored on SOFS, I have a very nice tool for that on GitHub 🙂
My methodology was to go collection by collection, migrate the disks, and move the session hosts into a new OU with the FSLogix settings for cutover.
j
@Bronson Magnan Please send me over the script. I will have a look. I am not going to mix UPD with ODCF shouldn’t be an issue 🙏🏼

also recommend clearing out all the temp files from the disks after the migration and the defrag and shrinking them. You can use my FSLogix Backup project on GitHub to accomplish that.

@Bronson Magnan can you send me also the script ?

Done

Thanks a lot @Bronson Magnan
