https://www.carlstalhood.com/category/workspace-app/ Scroll about half way down - We had some issues such as this with the old reciever on some horrendously outdated unpatched W7 machines, found Carl's site very useful to help with the refreshing issue at the time.
t
Issue started with Receiver 4.0 line IIRC. Reciever 3.X does PNA correctly. Receiver 4.0 the flickering is because it grabs the PNG from Storefront for each icon, makes a .ico file for each, assigns it to the shortcut then refreshes your desktop to make the icon appear. But it doesn't batch (at least with 4.12 -- the last version I used at my last org) so each friggin step is synchronous. Flicker, flicker flicker flicker
The solution we used? We ditched PNA and use the "Store" interface. No more flickering, no more unusable desktops for 5 mins while 200 apps loaded
r
Thanks Trent but unfortunately I don't use pna in this setup.
But the same process seems like its happening. Flicker ICON, Flick ICON, so on and so on.
t
interesting. Maybe some configuration for PNA is turned on making it do the process, even if it doesn't create a PNA structure?
The logging for Workspace/Receiver might help. The logs can be super verbose
IIRC, we found the various policies by this process: Exit reciever/workspace, delete Citrix Workspace/Reciever policy keys, start reciever and connect and launch resource
No issue? --> Exit Receiver, Apply Policy, remove key/value, etc...
continue until group of settings is found
I believe Citrix defaults to the Store/Service so this should validate that I think
r
Well Xenapp Services support is enabled in the store, Which I don use it, another old setting that was ticked before me .So I will go down that path. Thanks Trent.
t
If we have PNA enabled, how do I tell if we're using it? I don't think we are, yet we have the same flickering icon problem - but ONLY if we launch a published app within our published desktop (to another machine)
r
In store front you will see this.
Then you will see it in StoreFront under XenApp Service Support on the right hand side.
t
That's if it's enabled, right? How can I tell if clients are configured to use it?
I with I documented, but these log files might lead you to how to check
This is with PNA mode enabled
r
I thought you had to specify the path to the PnA in workspace to use it. Pnagent.xml or something like that.
Meaning you would see this In the workspace path. https://\<StoreFrontFQDN\>/Citrix/\<StoreName/PNAgent
I also thought that the pnagent was only for legacy Verison of recover. I didn't think workspace can use that.
t
It can. Same features exist. Essentially, "PNA" mode is putting icons on the desktop. Last I checked workspace allowed that
Found a screenshot of previous org's "PNA" mode:
put shortcuts on desktop/startment, etc
flicker flicker flicker
r
Dazzle is Pnagent? Ok I'm lost because I don't have set on a store and I'm still getting icons,,, self-service mode and shortcut placement
I found this on Carl's Stalhood site. "The PNAgent module is not included in Workspace app or Receiver 4.0 and newer. The older Receiver Enterprise includes the PNAgent module, but does not include Self-Service. The last version of Receiver Enterprise is 3.4." https://www.carlstalhood.com/workspace-app-for-windows/
t
My bad for using older terminology. PNA == Icons on the desktop/startment
r
I see now. Haha you had my mind like WTF and I losing it lol
I see now. So it's using the like placement and the flicker flicker bs.
t
🙂 Git rid of icons on the desktop/start menu and you'll get rid of the flicker and slownes
r
Oh man, that's hard to do. Dang well let's see what I can do
t
For each icon generated Citrix will "refresh" the desktop. The refresh is not instant, takes time. The more apps, the more icons, the more flicker
it sucked for us too. We switched to self-service mode because of these problems. Our users stuck with 3.4 for as long as possible until the SHA1 issue made it impossible and we had to migrate to 4. Self-Service without icons on desktop... But we did change it so some critical, mandatory, icons were on the desktop
IIRC, we used GPP to put a short cut to "MyApps" on the desktop, which just opened the self-service store. Seemed to get acceptance from the users OK
