Just curious, when that black screen appears. Is Explorer.exe idle in the details after you hit crtl, atl, delete in the veiwer tab at the top?
r
James what VDA are you using. Needs to be 2106 or newer I think
j
2112
r
✅
r
@James Rankin did you optimize the image? What if you manually rollout a 2022 server with just the VDA installed? So no other software or optimizations
j
@Ray Davis nothing happens when you hit Ctrl Alt Delete. When the problem originally started there was a user session created with all the processes, now there is nothing at all
@Rody Kossen no optimization. 2022 was working perfectly until this week, AFAIK
Let me manually create a 2022 server
Hmmm, interestingly when I do a manual install I get this
r
What does the log say?
j
Just an "error 1603" which is "fatal error during installation". I'm trying a different install approach, two secs
r
Ok. The log folder should have the complete install log which would indicate which part failed
j
i got the install completed on a vanilla 2022 and it works fine. Hmmm. Something in the build or policies is screwing it then 😞
Still can't fathom out what part of the build is screwing this - Server 2019 instances work fine using the same build process, it's only 2022 that fails. If I do a manual re-install of the Citrix VDA, it always fails to install - this is the error it bombs with "MSI (s) (24:78) [101916294] Product: Citrix HDX App Experience x64 -- Error 1904. Module C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\HDX\bin\IcaImeVc.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147024319. Contact your support personnel."
Well I finally fathomed this out......the issue was caused by the Citrix VDA being installed after all of the other applications on the box. Run the VDA install first, before anything else is installed bar the OS and patches, and it works absolutely fine. Happened on Server 2022 only, FWIW

Good to know! I always install the VDA as one of the first steps. So: • .Net • VC++ • GPU drivers • VDA • Rest of the stuff
j
Two days I've now got to convince my boss have been well spent 🙂
k
1 .NET 2. VC++ 3. PVS Target Device Software(Because of the annoying Telemetry bug appearing from time to time) 4. VDA 5. Rest

You can't rush perfectionist I always say. Easier said than done to a boss though.

The VDA install log is pretty good. It's under the "C:\Windows\Temp\Citrix\XenDesktop Installer" folder. But like others, I always install it before the apps, as it can be sensitive to any VC++ changes, etc.
