They'll cave

2025 will be the year of VDI!

Either that, or just use the web versions. They're pretty close in features now anyway
d
I’ve been having the conversation with my SPLA supplier, it sounds like changes are imminent to the QMTH programme. In essence this would open up the opportunity for T2 (Indirect) MS Partners to supply Windows 10 / 11 multi-session systems in their chosen environment. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/partner-center/announcements/2022-may#17
j
They’ll cave by continuing MS server OS like before or MS desktop OS will be allowed outside Azure/AzureStack HCI
r
I mean, that's my hope. They certainly did last time.
j
The only reason a lot of my customers still use the full client is all the plugins they use don't work in the web versions. If the plugins worked, they'd move to web
r
I wish my clients would embrace web
@Dave Brown Oh, that's very interesting
I also guess Office LTSC is on the table
Should we start "the petition" ? 🙂

@JimMoyle

Denis Gundarev said on twitter and E2E Berlin that its best to get the customers complain at MS reps and not random people on the internet 😄 Best chance to arrange something 🙂 Win 10/11 MultiSession should be supported on-prem on Azure Stack HCI afaik!?
j
Yep i believe you are correct on Azure Stack HCI
Yes, appears to be true
@Markus Zehnle That makes a lot of sense, but as a CSP, i represent a bunch of customers.
I emailed my Microsoft Rep, btw. I will let everyone know how it turns out.
If anyone would like to ride the "complaint train", here is my post in the partner community forum, which my Microsoft Rep led me to. https://www.microsoftpartnercommunity.com/t5/Feedback-Support-Discussions/Microsoft-365-Apps-for-Enterprise-on-Server-2022/m-p/73361

One "me too" and one "thumbs up" pressed... Thanks

great, thank you as well
A reply from Microsoft.

Gotta love the 'you could move to W10/11 MS on Azure' bit.
d
Ouch
j
There will be lawyers if this continues to be limited to Azure/Azure Stack HCI
m
But where are the lawyers re the W10/11 multi session monopoly? 🙂 nothing new in his reply...
r
I mean, it's a big middle finger to QMTH providers as well
Hey, you did everything we asked for to be listed as a QMTH, but no, you can't run that
I told my Citrix rep that he's likely going to lose THOUSANDS of licenses due to this.
Probably doesn't care either..
We need more of the community to reply to this thread.
j
I honestly think you could just get away with the web versions. The only thing you really lose is the ability to browse a filesystem and open a document directly in Word from Explorer, but I reckon we could find a way around that.
Of course, plugins might be an issue
n
We tried getting clinical staff to use the web version on a specific build, and they bitched and moaned about it even though it had every feature they needed.
j
Change doesn't come easy, I know. But if they do enough of it they will get used to it. I've actually started preferring the web version on my laptop, because I can see it better

n
If your data is in OneDrive - which is damn well should be in 2022 if you're an O365 customer - then the web version doesn't need to see your local drive, IMO.

Oh, I know, but our leadership just collapses to them without any pushback. It makes doing anything that much more difficult.
j
yeah but you'll always get people browsing to the OneDrive folder in Explorer and trying to open stuff from there. I'm sat trying to think of a way to open it in the browser
n
I've personally written job aids for accessing data, but we're still fighting that fight. Even getting somebody to read an e-mail about this is a challenge. At some point, you have to move forward and just make the change.
r
I mean you're not wrong, but you have to sell these solutions to the people buying them. Our clients are buying full versions of office on a super portable Citrix Desktop
"Change doesn't come easy"

I don't understand not allowing O365 on S22. Why you would want to miss out on that capital is beyond me.
The excuses laid out in that post are trash. All of those 'issues' can be resolved.
j
Guess you'll have to report that "due to Microsoft being intransigent, we have to switch you to the web versions of Office" - as for "missing out on the capital", it's no secret that Microsoft want rid of Server with Desktop Experience. RDSH is one of only two things that still require it.
r
i mean, i sort of get that. The not allowing us to run Windows Multi-Session without using Azure is the real kick in the balls
⤴️ 1
n
Even if you can't run OneDrive natively in S22... so what? Office apps have been able to access OD content for years, including in Office 2016, etc. directly through the app.
j
Was just going to add that - yeah, let us have Windows 10 MU outside of Azure. But it's the Azure spend they want
Hence - lawyers
⤴️ 1
r
Yeah, but that would take a decade, and my clients are going to suffer in a couple years
Driving a backhoe gets more and more appealing all the time
j
One of my clients just last month retired Server 2003. You can follow their model 🙂
n
...through MS headquarters?
😂 1
r
LOL... 2003... you win
We still have clients on 2008R2, that may be the oldest
RIP SBC
k
@Ryan Gallier do you have a link to where that conversation is at? Thanks sir!
j
Clearly not legal what they doing but who care about laws in 2022. Anyway I'll make sure my client complains to MS about this. How to force ppl to use their Cloud ... That's why monopole is bad but here we are. The MS Teams optimization will be a deal breaker if it's not available. Maybe it's time to go back to fat client (we are kind of already doing it with all optimization happening) and redevelop business apps to web version compatible all browsers and stop buying ... MS, long term plan.

Man, they just broke it off in us all with this.
r
Yup, pretty much
n
Immediately thought of this thread when I saw that post this morning on Reddit.

Posted the complaint thread in there as well
