Regarding the "Analyze Logon Duration" script, have you enabled the required eventlogging parts? How large is your eventlog? You can use the debug level to get to the grounds 🙂 Anyways ping @Guy Leech 🙂 Beside the script you can use procmon which can also kick in via ControlUp (Guy wrote an Script Action). If you have some "bad" GPO's with faulty drives in suspicion you can use "Analyze GPO extenstion load time" Script Action within ControlUp.

If you have the latest Analyze Logon Duration script and have enabled command line auditing too (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-ds/manage/component-updates/command-line-process-auditing) although you can now set the CONTROLUP_SUPPORT environment variable to something like "Prep:100" and it will enable all required auditing and set the Security event log to 100MB in size to give a good history range,e.g. $env:CONTROLUP_SUPPORT = 'Prep:100' or if you are using CU, set the "Debug" parameter in the console as 'Prep:100'
With command line auditing enabled it should be able to report the duration of any script assigned to the user object in AD. However, the script will only get specific phases of the logon, not every little detail so for that I wrote this script https://github.com/guyrleech/Microsoft/blob/master/Get%20Process%20Durations.ps1 which when you specify a time range via -start and -end will show you all processes launched in that period, their duration and their parent which I've had a great deal of success in using to find slow logon processes
Also, don't forget the power of the event log in giving clues as to what is going on. I've pushed some 1 liners out in the past but now there's a script you can use to show all event log entries in a given period which again I find very useful for logon analysis - https://github.com/guyrleech/Microsoft/blob/master/event%20aggregator.ps1

thanks for all the info here @Guy Leech i'm not a big PS guy, however it looks like i can log in with my affected user account and run the PS once i enable command line auditing? are those the correct steps?
g
For looking at process start, stop & durations, enable process creation & termination success auditing via secpol.msc as an admin (or GPO)
Will need to run script as an admin though as it accesses the Security event log

great ty. will let you know how it goes.
got it! awesome, thank you!
between guy's script and ControlUP problem is shell.exe any ideas on this one?
@Markus Zehnle so i have guy's procmon script, i'm guessing i can run that against shell.exe after logon to see the delays with it?
wait that wont work, shell.exe is already gone by the time the user hits the desktop
i got it all worked out, i used controlup to execute procmon on a vm before i logged in and captured all the data, thanks all

@Nick Casagrande did locate the reason for the delay?
n
ms support is lookinng into the procmon logs, awaiting a response
👍 1
so ms support came back and told me the logon delays are not fslogix related according to the logs (which i told them that in the beginning) and that procmon shows gpo,, a/v and citrix stuff chewing up some seconds here and there processing logons, no surprise there either. owell just something i gotta live with i guess

You are not by any chance using McAfee AV?

no
