Good question. I'm also interested to find out what alternatives are out there. I found Uniprint and PrinterLogic but never went deeper than checking their blog posts or official web pages.

There are not that many vendors left in that space. UniPrint, PrinterLogic, LRS Solutions, PrinterOn, Tricerat https://www.citrixsynergy.com/exhibit/sponsors.html

Thanks Carl. What’s your recommendation?

PaperCut -- have been using it for many years with great success. Inexpensive, flexible, excellent support. https://papercut.com/

Most of what’s been suggested is redirected printing. It sounds like you want something where the client device is removed from equation?

I’m not really into printing but I know we now use Printix it is a cloud based follow me system and seems to work great.

We have a small implementation of PaperCut here, basically just for the IS staff on my floor, and I love it. No idea how much it costs, but it does work well. We took a look at LRS a while back as an overall solution (Citrix, Windows, Epic), but I think it was some insane amount of money to implement.

For our entire campus it ws something like $12k and we pay I think around $4-5k per year for maintenance. We charge our students a small amount above a certain monthly allocation of free pages and made our money back in around 3 months! We have something like 400+ printers; we also use their Raspberry Pi based print release station software (and run over 100 of them) which are very cost effective and I believe you don't need to pay separately for PaperCut licenses to run those with our bundle. Nobody else came close in cost for the features.

Thanks for all answers. I’m not sure if anyone considered how much network traffic has been generated by your solution. In my case all will be transferred directly to printers via slow connections.
t
It's negligible compared to Netflix, Hulu, Instagram, and Facebook traffic! 😁

One if my customer has running PrinterLogic for 22000 users

I've implemented Xerox Follow You with Equitrac software 10 years ago and it worked well but it wasn't network friendly at all
n
Nuance owns Equitrac now, and they swear that the product is better now. We POC'd it a long time ago, but nobody liked it.

At that time there weren't too many options on market and that org still uses it and working fine along with a pay-as-you-print managed service. If things work fine, why change it? I'm also (passively) looking for something that's bandwidth friendly as @Arthur is but haven't got the time to do any deep dives since the priority for it is quite small.
a
ThinPrint seems to be the only one solution with “bandwidth” optimization with direct printing over slow connections for printers with build-in ThinPrint client. Yes - some printers contains build-in ThinPrint clients.
