CR is the way forward. With a small 80 user shop you can build side by side or perform in-place upgrades with ease.

Good point. I should have asked about the client also. Is that a good location for LTSR or should reciver/workspace also be CR
d
CR if they have the knowledge to maintain it or are willing to pay the external consultants. If CR then CR everywhere. What are they doing on the VDA side? If on SAC for Windows and maybe even O365 I‘d definitely go the CR route for Citrix as well.
l
I would go latest of everything to begin with. I don't think you'll have any large issues with a small set of users. As always though, it's about the requirements.
d
I think with next LTSR 1912 we have to rethink the whole story. LTSR has some advantages and the features are up to date, so no problem to use this version for the next two years from my point of view. The current 7.15 is simply to far behind regarding the features.
l
But LTSR will be outdated just 3 months after release feature wise. Obviously we don't know how much until it happens but that is the point and the risk.
d
yeah what Leee says, will be outdated very soon. LTSR imho only makes sense for large RDSH deployments used to publish legacy LOB apps these days
r
I am a fan of staying CR but it'll take some work. for me it depends on how much your 80 user shop will allocate to a second stage env so you can install and vet upgrades before moving forward
Also how mission critical would those users be, are you needing 5 9's etc.
d
But do you think we can expect much more features in future releases like had the last 2 years?
j
Also depends on what OS you need to support...

Yep, @Jarian Gibson is right. There are a lot of places where IT is stuck supporting win7/2008r2. I have seen places where a business critical app is still on XP and they still use XD4!
d
Also interesting and doesn’t speak for CR: https://www.go-euc.com/citrix-vda-version-breakdown-update/
l
@Dennis it's a good point. I don't really know though. Who can tell with the intelligence being built into products more and more. Customer requirements are always evolving.
n
For us, it's not even the features that we're missing out on by being on 7.15 LTSR - it's the performance gains in CR. 1912 LTSR can't come soon enough, and I expect to make the argument that we switch to CR at some point in the near future so that we don't fall behind like we are now.
a
Doesn’t matter if you’re on CR or LSTR, you still need to keep infrastructure and clients up to date. 80 vs. 80,000 users is irrelevant too, improvements in the stack keep those users happy and productive
s
The highest version I can go based on what is supported by our ISVs. Healthcare vendors move slowly. That aside, whatever version of VDA and Receiver I can easily deploy that is the least buggy.
n
That’s why we split our Citrix environment. Our Epic Citrix site needs to remain on LTSR, but we (Enterprise) can go in either direction. We’ve had decent success with keeping clients updated since 4.x versions of Receiver using SCCM.
c
I have CR in the business network and LTSR in our non internet process network
Will 1912 only be LTSR?
s
I'll be CR for ~3 months
@Nick Panaccio do you have to maintain separate license servers for each environment then or do they share the same license server? I assume shared and that the license manager wouldn't care if a user has 1 session open on each XD site? Hinting at not wanting to double up on license purchasing.
j
I don't think the LTSR holds as much prevalence as it used to. I know i used to hold clients off upgrading because it was not a pretty thing to do. These days Citrix has a new version quicker than patches come out so it makes sense to upgrade to CR-1 at a minimum. if you don't need the upgrade i wouldn't be doing it just for the sake of it
n
All three of our sites share the same license server.
@James Grindrod: Agreed, which is why I want to get off the LTSR track. I'm comfortable with the upgrade schedule, and like you said, our goal would be to simply be CR-1 most of the time.
j
@Nick Panaccio Back in the day i used to follow the LTSR if i needed to, but Citrix used to do better RUP... now they just bring out a new version lol. we are in the position where we are talking upgrades aswell.
