Contribute my friend. I've applied this year. Start that blog, present at Citrix meetings, share scripts etc your usb redirection piece makes a good article btw..
r
Ok so that sounds simple enough.
Thanks Leee
l
I could be wrong ;-) we'll see if my applications successful. My experience with the community has been great. People are really encouraging and helpful which really sets the standard.
You're welcome man. No probs.
r
Yea i see alot on this community on there as well which is good. Everyone is so helpful
l
It's the way we all progress really. Do you have Twitter?
r
I do Check out Ray Davis (@RayDavis83): https://twitter.com/RayDavis83?s=01 I Dont use it as much since i got on slack
l
Well worth adding most of the people on this workspace, the latest news is always on the twitter verse.
r
Ok good deal, will do
l
What sort of environment are you managing day to day?
r
Well today its not very big, 400 + 100 desktops, 20 or more app servers. But they didnt really understand the citrix concept and was about to pull the plug on it until i showed them the vaule, but its a slow process. Change is hard for the. But im used to 5k or so users. I tend to go to companies and upgryay them, implement new things like WEM, fslogix, EDT. Cleanup, and training. Then i move to my next company. But im at a place now where i like the company so im expanding it. Looking into citrix cloud with Azure intergrations. Ideally i only like to focous on cva_vd with virtualization.
I been doing it for about 10 years now. Still have things i need to learn. One being app layering. Just time is not my friend. I also do alot of VMware and other general IT concepts. Kinda hard to focous on what i want to do with a smaller company.
l
I hear you, you're responsible for alot of stuff at a small company. I think app layer is well over-rated, it's just another layer of management. I prefer a task sequence and clean repeatable builds.
If there is anything you think maybe we can collab on for a blog I'd be more than happy to participate. Sharing the load means less time spent ;-)
r
Yea man that would help alot. There is so much out there and dont want to be a repeat of those guys who have the same material. Im still trying to figure where to start. Thought about writing a very detailed Article on continuous availability. From these aspect 1. Vmware with RDM setup 2. Complete windows cluster setup. 3. Complete continuous availability 4. Fslogix setup go into details on what policies are needed and why you need them. 5. Simulation of a failure, and to show the uptime and no downtime. Just some thoughts.
l
Sounds perfect to me. Spot on, it's something always coming up in conversation on slack and more to that it also has a nice followup with SOFS. We'll co-write it, credit each other and publish on our respective blogs.
j
Hello Ray as Leee already mentioned you should participate in the community. Doesn’t matter if it’s via Social Media, CUCG meetings, webinars or other events like E2EVC. Start with a blog and be passionate about the things you are doing in your job/freetime. Everybody has the chance to become a CTA 🙂 Just do what you like and share it with us
r
Sounds goo man.
Thanks Julian. Sounds like im on the right path now. Need to get my material out there. I have alot, and its very detailed. Sometimes, i cant comprehend somethings so i break it down so small that i could literally give it to my 15 year son and he could do it
m
I’m a CTA, and really it’s just about giving back to the community.
l
This is what I mean about the encouragement. Awesome!
I'll get my lab rebuilt with ESX this weekend.
r
Yea it is great. Alot of good people out there.
Ill start this week and putting my material together in my test environment and staging. Ill hit you up in a week or so to sync up
w
start somewhere with something. no one knew who i was in november 2008 when i started writing.
👍 1
l
Now Carl's a documentation script legend with a rather substantial lab ;-) that's not a euphemism. Lol
r
Wow thats funny, no one knew who you were. Your all over the internet now
d
One of the things that amazes me when reading people's Twitter profiles or meeting them in real life is where you find the time to blog, lab stuff out and contribute back to the community. I have a wife and 2 kids <10yo. I get grief off the 'trouble and strife' if i spend too much time on 'tech' outside of work. And then the work days are spent, erm, working, and most weekday evenings invariably doing some sort of out-of-hours work that can't be done during the day. So to create a bubble of time to spend on lab/blog seems to be a tall order. Maybe when the kids are older and the wife has left me! 🤣
Goes back to what you were saying in London the other week Leee - investing in yourself.
l
Time is always a struggle, just blog about what you do though. Automate the lab. Pleasure to meet you David, so important to invest in yourself.
d
Likewise Leee. Your talk on Automation Framework gave us lots to talk about 🙂
l
I always love it when people introduce themselves, especially if my content is relevant to them. Anything I can help with, just drop me a message. It's a great framework.
s
You are active on here Ray. That’s a great start. Be in proximity to those who are in the community. https://www.citrix.com/blogs/2019/04/01/why-you-should-join-the-citrix-user-group-community/ Are you active in CUGC? That’s heavily weighted for CTA program. Either leading a local group, participating in forums, or spreading the community spirit on social media.
👍 1
CTAs are voted in by existing CTAs so make sure they know who you are and how you contribute.
Applications for 2020 are closed but you have all of 2020 to get your name out there.
👍 3
@Leee Jeffries it surprises me you are not a CTA.
e
Exactly David, invest in yourself. Time is hard, start out slowly setting off 2 hours in the weekend to blog and learn new stuff. I started in 2009 and basically the community has been my full time job until 2019 when I went into consulting again. Quickly landed gigs and been full time ever since. @Ray Davis we all love detailed step by step blogs, just split them up into series to break’em up
d
Thanks @Leee Jeffries. And @Eric for creating it!

c
What everyone else said give back to the community: blog / vlog / webinars / presentations :)

Nice pic update David

What’s blog platform recommendation?
l
I use wordpress but it's does really matter.
j
Wordpress 🙂 I suggest you to rent a small VPS server and install Wordpress on there. When going directly via wordpress (even when paying for the standard/ad-free subscription) you don't get any plugins at all. Plugins are only available with the Business package (~25$/month).
l
I use siteground. It's fast and reliable.
c
WordPress there is a Dutch company named TransIP they sell sites and have a one click to install WordPress function and auto backups etc for around 4 euro’s a month ;)
a
I am definitely in favor of a solution where the supplier takes care of product updates - Wordpress. It makes no sense to follow the updates and it may turn out that while on vacation someone will replace my blog using the vulnerability that the update appeared when I slept.
r
Wordpress wants 300$ upfront. Not sure why. That was for the 25$ monthly plan
l
Check out Siteground. They're reasonable and the hosting is fast plus it integrates with cloudflare so you have an almost automatic CDN. GoDaddy is what I had before and to be perfectly honest, it was slow and the support was not great.
r
Ok, cool. The site i have now is cheesey lol.
s
Could also just do blogspot subdomain to start and see if it takes off
r
Not sure i follow Steve?
Never mind i understand. Took me a sec. Late night
I love how carl stalhood site is laid out. Organized, and easy to find material. Looking for that layout.
e
Helge Klein did tweet about a free good looking WP Theme the other day. I’m using WPXHosting
r
Ok, cool ill check that out. Thanks Eric. Your site is awesome btw
Looks like wpx is the sweetest deal right now.
e
Thx, awesome
