You can use GPO to import the Chrome profile to Edge
But this will only work if the profile is in the original location (AppData)
n
I'm using Roaming for the data, not Local
d
Did you change the location via GPO because of redirection.xml ?
n
But that GPO basically has the same issue - if I run it too early, it'll miss bookmarks.
Yep
d
Damn, I had the same problem!
n
I mean, I have to blame you on that one. ๐Ÿ˜„
d
Yep ๐Ÿ™ˆ
n
This isn't a major issue, really. I can mask it for now, just trying to come up with another way to migrate data at some point.
d
Here is what I did: I copied the relevant files from the default chrome back to the original location with a WEM task (file action, set to run once)
n
We don't allow users to do shit in Chrome, really. Bookmarks are basically it.
So in that sense, this should be easier, since that's all I have to deal with.
d
This should work, you can try to import it manually
Only to see if it works
n
That's exactly what I'm doing right now in my testing - WEM task to copy bookmarks to the Edge location. Works like a charm.
I actually pre-create the Edge folder. When you launch Edge, it doesn't overwrite the bookmarks file, and they are available in the browser from the start.
d
Yes
i have to put the kids to bedโ€ฆ
See you
n
Seeya
So if you App Mask the new Edge Chromium shortcut, it is replaced with the legacy Edge shortcut automatically. Lovely.
m
Iโ€™m going to have to go through all this eventually, Iโ€™m backing up our chrome roaming profiles to OneDrive, I wonder if I can restore them to edge
n
I'm going to play around with this tomorrow using PowerShell. If I come up with something, I'll post it here.
o
Following ! Keen to get off G Chrome to MS Chrome Asap for my main client
n
I've found ways to merge json files, but Edge doesn't appear to like the formatting, and completely ignores it.
@Martin Zugec: You were handy with the XML merges I mentioned months ago. Any chance you've got a way to merge Chrome and Edge bookmarks (or JSON in general)?
Starting to wonder if this is even worth it. I can export single files to another JSON, to HTML (because Edge can't import the JSON Bookmarks file), to CSV, but then scripting the import becomes the issue. Building the actual JSON structure is the issue, and it's way above my capability in PS right now.
If you already have sync'd bookmarks in Edge, overwriting the Bookmarks file with your Chrome version still seems to work fine. When the sync'd bookmarks come down, they are merged together. So at least there's that.
To update this thread, April's patches threw another wrench into things. I'm App Masking Edge, which causes legacy Edge's shortcut to appear in Start. However, legacy Edge was pulled in April's patch, so now there is a Microsoft Edge shortcut that has no idea and does nothing.
k
Have you tried hiding the path to the legacy Edge app?
n
Looking to do that now, but I don't have legacy Edge installed on any of my boxes. Any chance you hve the path?
Nevermind, found it in a VM: C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
Nope, doesn't work. The shortcut remains.
k
Hmmm....
n
I think it's because it's a garbage UWP app in the Start menu.
Not a traditional shortcut
I was all set on masking Edge and waiting until I get the approval to rip out Chrome. Now I probably have to go to my plan B, which is allowing Edge, and using a script to convert Chrome to a Bookmarks.html file stored in the user's H: drive, in case they want to import their bookmarks themselves.
k
Which version of W10 are you using? I'll see if I can reproduce your issue
n
20H2 with the latest April patch.
App Masking worked fine before they removed Legacy Edge. But something appears to have been left behind.
If you tell me you can App Mask it, then I'll have to look at updating my Platform layer, in case the issue is there.
It's KB5001330, FYI
k
I think I have been able to App Mask Edge, it's been a while since I did it the last time
m
you can uninstall edge entirely if you change the permissions on the uwp app database and go in there with sqllite and rip the entry out ๐Ÿ˜›
n
Why do you hate me?
๐Ÿ˜„ 1
m
Iโ€™ve done it, it didnโ€™t seem to break anything
itโ€™s not recommended though
n
I'm holding out hope that Kasper finds something that I've missed.
k
@Nick Panaccio you are still on App Layering right?
n
Yep
Let me guess, you can App Mask it just fine?
k
I assume you are doing regular Windows patching?
n
Every 2-3 months, unless there's something major.
k
OK. I am using WIMWitch to slipstream patches, and then reinstall my golden image machine which then ends up as a new PVS vDisk. I can see that the C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe path does no long contains any exe files
n
Hmm, mine does. If you App Mask it, I take it there is no Edge icon in your Start menu?
k
Well, I haven't tried that yet, I am currently installing a test W10 machine with a "vanilla" ISO instead to do an in-place CU install
n
Gotcha. I'm going to add a version to my platform layer just to see if that changes anything, since I did not update it after this round of Windows Updates.
๐Ÿ‘ 1
I only see this in that folder in my updated Platform layer:
k
Same here, but you still see the legacy Edge when you App mask the not-so-legacy Edge?
n
Bouncing my test VM now so that the rule applies. frx reload-rules wasn't changing anything.
One thing that I just noticed is that the screenshot I just posted looked the same in this image before the masking rule.
m
Sorry, just saw the notification (about gazillion posts before), still want to merge those JSON files? If you can send me both files, I can put together a quick and dirty sample code.
k
I just pinged you Martin ๐Ÿ˜‰
n
Martin: I'll PM them to you. If you manage to find a way, I'll owe you many beers.
Kasper: App Masking didn't remove the icon, and when I click on it, Edge actually runs. lol
k
WTF?
n
I only tried to mask the shortcut, though. Last time I was masking the shortcut and the Edge Chromium install directory.
Masking both now to see if it's the same.
k
Where are you seeing this legacy Edge shortcut when you mask the new Edge?
n
It replaced the Edge Chromium shortcut. I posted a screenshot at the start of this thread.
k
Not seeing that here, but I haven't patched Windows yet
n
So this is what I'm masking right now: Directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application File: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Edge.lnk When I do this, clicking on Microsoft Edge (blank icon) does nothing.
If I just mask the shortcut, it will still actually launch Edge Chromium.
This is dumb and makes no sense.
k
I agree
n
I really hope that you see the same thing.
k
I have this now:
n
Yep, same ones I'm using.
m
This is simplistic version - you will need to tweak it a bit, but it should give you an idea how to do it: $json1 = Get-Content .\Bookmarks-Chrome.json -Raw | ConvertFrom-Json; $json2 = Get-Content .\Bookmarks-Edge.json -Raw | ConvertFrom-Json; @($json1.roots; $json2.roots) | ConvertTo-Json
n
I think the issue is when you have folders within the JSON file, because then it completely throws the formatting off.
I've tried something similar to that
@Kasper Johansen: It's almost like Microsoft has some sort of internal check, where if Edge Chromium is gone, it tries to replace the shortcut with Edge. Only Edge is now removed. Like they didn't pull that failsafe after the April patch.
m
For JSON, I would usually start with plain json file - just try to merge it manually and see if it works. Next step, I would try to merge simple, flat files. After that, I would go absolutely crazy and just try to merge everything (the more exotic json file, the better) to validate if code works. Your json files contains checksum, it's quite possible that browser is validating it.
k
I would not be surprised if MS put in a failsafe like that
I see the same with a non-patched Windows
This is ridiculous
I'll test with the patch and provide feedback tomorrow, I am of to bed
๐Ÿ‘ 1
This is a mess. It seems like MS didn't really remove the legacy Edge from Windows 10, at least not entirely. I have tried uninstalling the new Edge that produces the same result. A "ghost" shortcut to the old legacy Edge which doesn't work because legacy Edge is no longer installed
I have not been able to hide/remove the "ghost" legacy Edge shortcut from the start menu
n
It's good to have confirmation that it's not just me.
k
Yeah, well MS made a mess IMO. Even with an uninstall of the new Edge, you get a ghost legacy Edge shortcut, which doesn't work
Hopefully this is fixed in the next W10 version
n
I'm going to play around with combining JSON files again, but I've already spent a hell of a lot of time on it.
k
Why is MS making this so hard ๐Ÿ˜•
n
May just use the job aid I wrote up and let users import their own shit if they want to.
m
Open a request at Feedback Hub. MSFT will not fix it without customers complaining about it ๐Ÿ˜‰
๐Ÿ‘ 1
n
I did that with Teams and GPO control over a year ago....... ๐Ÿ˜„
I submitted the bug through Feedback Hub.
m
Link? We can help to upvote it
n
This was through the Feedback Hub app. Not sure where it actually lands on the web.
m
There is a Share button or something, I always use app for feedback
Share
in top right corner
n
I closed the app before you said that
This would be easier if Edge allowed you to open links that open directly to Settings, but that doesn't work, either.
m
I remember you can find your submitted ideas in that app somewhere ๐Ÿค”
n
Probably not if you're not signed in, but I'll keep looking.
Fuck it, I'll just send in the same feedback signed in
m
Don't think I've ever seen this message ๐Ÿ™‚
n
haha
It did say it may take some time before it's available
Unless Feedback Hub hid the message and left a blank shortcut................
boom
