I may be able to point you in the right direction.
You want iut to always show, right?
Or is it just never showing?
a
well ultimately we are wanting that warning pop up and the key tray icon to show whenever uses fall into the expiration warning period (14 days for us)
i think Storefront used to give a warning too but that isnt working either but thats a fight for another day
n
I think there's a GPO policy to configure the OS to prompt you, but am not 100% sure.
As for the icon, if you can get the policy working, go to Notification settings and change that password one to Always Show (assuming you're doing this on a test device).
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Notifications\Settings\*FindTheKeyUsed*
Create a REG_DWORD value named Enabled and set it to 1. Bake that into your image, or use WEM to apply it as a registry task. That way it's always shown./
I do that with that OneDrive 'automatic file download' crap.
a
awesome thanks man! assuming if that FindTheKeyUsed isnt there just create it and then the Enabled dword ?
n
Not sure, honestly. Everything I configure shows up in that key for me.
hmm, testing it on a test VM and it doesn't appear to add it there.

Forgive me if I'm being weird but that screenshot looks more like Windows 2008 R2 than Windows 10
n
Yeah, it definitely is, but W10 does have a similar feature.
a
yup agreed.....i just didnt have a screenshot on 10 but thats the same icon

I did a registry compare for this, and it didn't show any difference.
Microsoft likely won't allow you to set that then.
Probably for security reasons
The weird thing is, that icon disappears if you don't click on the banner
a
i have a test user thats in the expiration window that didn't see they key icon so i created it manually. i'll have him reboot and see what happens (not sure if theres a way for me to "force" the behavior on a test user otherwise)
well thats odd......i think normally that icon is supposed to remain as long as you're in that expiration countdown period, right?
n
Disappears for me right away:
a
so the key goes away when that pop up does?
n
The key is never created
the bold part was just me writing where that value would be created - that's not an actual legit name
a
but when that Consider changing your password prompt goes away does that key icon down by the clock remain for you?
n
Nope
lolol, in fact, clicking on the banner doesn't do anything, either. It all just disappears.
a
well damn.....i wonder if thats how its meant to work now
n
I'd probably let SF handle this rather than the VDA, I'd think.
a
i got the pop up to work for my test user but they are saying thats not going to be very helpful of course
ya maybe.......i guess thats not working either lately so i'll have to start digging into that
ya we have SF set to Remind users before their passwords expire and tried both "use reminder settings from AD GP" and custom but no such luck .
wonder if we have to enable the Account Self-Service
n
One way to find out...
